You know, if anyone had pitched Fraser/Kowalski to me as "imagine a hilarious Eight/Fitz AU with MOUNTIES!" I would've watched the last two seasons of due South a lot sooner.

Spoilers for the series finale - not that I've watched the whole thing yet, I started off out of order )

I got very turned off by Big Bang Theory because it seemed to have an excess of Nice-Guy-ism. Am I oversensitive?

In short - love the show but it's a very good question )

Have you seen the latest S8 comic (Kennedy and Satsu)? If so what do you think.

No, not yet! It sounds like a setup dreamed up just for me, though, so I hope it's good.

Housemates don't get anon rights, especially when they're being smug, so [livejournal.com profile] marymac asked (to paraphrase, as she asked in person) So, you were firmly on the Ray V side of the Ray wars; how do you feel about Ray K now?

The fact that I'm only watching these episodes now, twelve years after I was in the fandom and at least five years after I got them on disc, should amply demonstrate why I never get to snark at anyone in Who fandom for not being unwilling or unable to move on to the new one when their Doctor or companion leaves )

Have you read/seen Twilight?

I've read the first one, which was just awful on every level, almost physically painful to get through; no desire to read the rest. I liked the film, though.

Any general fannish pet peeves? Or pet peeves for DW fandom in particular?

Cut for length )

([livejournal.com profile] who_daily, don't link, please. There's posting unlocked under the terms of the meme and then there's whinging at fandom about how they're DOIN IT WRONG)

I like this meme.

Ask me anything: all types of fannish opinions, good, bad, and ugly. I'm screening all comments so ask me anything fannish-related and I'll answer (in a separate post) with complete honesty. Any TV show/book/movie that you're pretty sure I've mentioned in the past is fair game, as are thoughts on general themes and trends in fandom/fiction, lists of loved/hated characters, thoughts on ships, whatever. Comments are screened so you can ask whatever you want without being "revealed." If you don't care about being revealed you can let me know.

Current fandoms/things I'm watching are Doctor Who, Merlin, Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, IT Crowd, Buffyverse (I'm half-following season 8), Discworld, trashy regency romances, anything else you think I've seen.

Multifandom Gen Battle looking for prompts; I knew that time I'd been devoting to thinking about what characters from different fandoms should meet and be BFFs wasn't for naught.

Am hosting a women of Doctor Who celebration post on the brilliant [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon comm. \o/

I've posted a Classic Who picspam over at [livejournal.com profile] whoadventures. Large post, not dial-up friendly.
doyle: tardis (merlin - Uther/Morgana art)
[livejournal.com profile] whoadventures, for fic and discussion about adventures in the Doctor Who universe. Because I don't think it's possible to have too many stories with robots and space pirates. All eras, characters, pairings welcome.

Also, I got an awesome haul at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, you guys. Check it out - my icon's from an amazing Uther/Morgana artwork [livejournal.com profile] vandonovan did.

My [livejournal.com profile] classicdw_fic entry, xposting here because one of my New Year's Resolutions is to be better about having my fic all in one place.

Title: Play Up And Play The Game
Author: Doyle
Character/s: Charley, Margaret Pollard
Pairing: none
Rating: G
Prompt: Prompt was for an audio companion before they met the Doctor.
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] castrovalva9
Word count: 1815
Disclaimer: Doctor Who belongs to the BBC, the Pollards belong to Big Finish.
Author's notes: It’d be remiss to write a 1920s boarding school story without tipping my hat to Angela Brazil.
Summary: Very few people understand 12-year-old Charley Pollard, her older sister least of all.

Yuletide!

To my Yuletide Santa:

First off, a double apology: sorry for the lateness of this letter (I completely changed my sign up at the very last minute and until I got my hands on the computer with my sign-up email I wasn't 100% sure what my requests were) and sorry for any general incoherence in the requests themselves. As I say, last minute change, very late at night...

Anyway, thanks so much for volunteering to write in my fandoms! I'm hugely excited about the prospect for fic in any of these and I know I'll be delighted with whatever you come up with. My general likes and dislikes: I love humour, fics expanding on bits of canon, zany schemes, comedic misunderstandings, ensembles, dialogue, characters sounding like themselves, AUs where the canon branches off in a different direction, happy or at least hopeful endings; I love gen, het, slash, femslash, threesomes; I'm not all that fond of PWPs, and I really dislike non-con and character or ship bashing, even of characters I personally dislike.

Ramblings on Lost in Austen, St Trinians, The IT Crowd and Coupling under the cut )

I've seen a meme on the old flist:

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've only read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

Anybody know where this comes from and what this 'Big Read' is? The list is so similar to the BBC's Big Read that I assume that must be it, but some of the books are missing and some others (like the Bible) have been added, and the order's all wrong.

I'd always assumed tales of the incredibly short notice given to PhD students in my department was apocryphal, but I've just been told that my confirmation viva (the meeting that decides whether I get to stay on as a PhD) requires me to submit a literature review and a journal paper within the next week. I've written a literature review but it needs significantly overhauled; the journal paper doesn't exist at all, as I've never written one. My supervisor's not in the country. Fuck. (Comments off as I need to get off the internet...)
doyle: tardis (Default)
Heads up - something weird's going on with my home internet (we're with Virgin Media - we can access all sites fine, albeit slowly, apart from Livejournal on my computer, and Fark on my housemate Kevin's. Which would be the sites each of us use most. We have no idea why this is happening, or how to fix it.) So if I'm not replying to comments more than usual, ignoring ficathon entries written for me, etc, apologies - I can only access LJ at work right now, and since there's no net access in my labs it means my time's limited.

Many moons ago I ran [livejournal.com profile] buffyverse1000, a slightly mad project to get people to write 1000 different pairings in the Buffyverse. Now [livejournal.com profile] settiai's running a Doctor Who/Torchwood/SJA version: [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000. This makes me squee delightedly, so if you share my desire to pair everyone ever up in the Doctor Who universe (including the super-obscure one-off characters from the books and audios and comics), go and check it out.
doyle: tardis (Default)
I'm watching a 70s sitcom called Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads (and loving it, so thanks to the anon on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets who posted about it) and loved this little exchange, as the two main characters wake up in a police cell:

Bob: What happened?!
Terry: Well... do you remember a police box and a strange Doctor...?

My show, it gets everywhere.
doyle: tardis (companion - leela)
Two fics from me, both short comedy stuff (I WAS SHOCKED TOO):

Title: Domestic Goddess
Characters: Gwen/Rhys, Ianto, Tosh (briefly)
Rating: PG
Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] prettyquotable for the Gwen ficathon: request was ‘Gwen/Rhys post-wedding. Gwen tries to cook lasagna for Rhys but fails miserably.’
Summary: Cooking, in theory, sounds simpler than crazed shapeshifting vampire aliens. In theory.

Title: Beware the Jabberwock
Characters: Fitz, Eight, Compassion
Rating: PG-13
Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] kseda who wanted an exciting, cracky adventure with lizards. She didn't specify silly or plotless, but I took it as read...
Summary: Fitz and the Doctor ponder elephants, alien megafauna and whether Wuthering Heights might be improved by some enormous lizard action.

I watched the Four and Leela story Invasion of Time tonight. Brilliant stuff, but one bit in particular stood out:

I set this up ages ago but only remembered today I never finished and unlocked it - Classic Doctor Who episodes love meme. Go. Squee.

Now, it could be that everyone else in old school Who fandom already knows this and it's the equivalent of 'omg did you know Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who!!!1!' but it's entirely new to me: last night we were talking about the Brig (as one does) and my housemate mentioned seeing Nicholas Courtney on Harry Hill's sketch show some years back - playing the Brig. And singing 'Don't Leave Me This Way'.

Surely not, I thought. That's too brilliantly insane to possibly be true. So I googled a bit and found this Nick Courtney interview:

I recorded that back in October, as The Brigadier. My agent contacted me and said would you like to do The Harry Hill Show and I said, yes of course. It was wonderful to do, obviously he (Harry) had grown up with Doctor Who and liked the Brigadier and asked me to do a guest spot. I do a scene with a Cyberman and another scene where I’m singing a song by The Communards called Don’t Leave Me This Way and it should be going out at the end of February I think. So you’ll be able to see The Brigadier in full costume singing Don’t Leave Me This Way, so that should be a laugh. (Laughter).

WHAT. ALSO: THIS IS CLEARLY DOCTOR WHO CANON. SOMEHOW.
doyle: tardis (jossverse - dawn)
Authors are live on [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08: my probably entirely obvious entry is below. I was really lucky in who I was assigned; there were loads of [livejournal.com profile] booster17's fics I loved and I spent ages going back on forth on which one to write, finally rejecting the Rose/Jake/Mickey pr0n and the Jack/Gwen shag or die because I couldn't think of any sort of twist on them, and the Sarah one because I wasn't sure if the original writer had seen Sarah Jane Adventures, and I thought making a fic into a different fandom might be a bit off. So, I picked the one with Dawn and Jack, because I really really like the thought of Dawn meeting Nine, Rose and Jack.

Title: The Great Bikini Incident (The Key to Time Remix)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4
Summary: Dawn’s suspicious of the three electricity inspectors outside her sister’s Rome apartment.
Fandom: Buffy/Doctor Who
Characters: Dawn, Nine, Rose, Jack
Rating: G
Disclaimer: Property of Mutant Enemy and the BBC
Original story: The Great Bikini Incident by [livejournal.com profile] booster17

The Great Bikini Incident (The Key to Time Remix) )
doyle: tardis (companion - Rose (skyward))
Title: They Came to Norway to Eat Our Brains
Author: Doyle
Characters/Pairing: Rose/Jack, Mickey, Jake
Rating: PG
Notes: Very late backup for the [livejournal.com profile] available_very ficathon for [livejournal.com profile] honorh who wanted a reunion between Rose and Jack in Pete’s world, Mickey, yorkie!Rose, no Doctor and no angst.
Summary: The Torchwood base at Darlig ulv Stranden has a problem with zombies. Well, one zombie (suspected). And when the pictures come through in London, Rose is shocked to realise who it is.
Length: 5000 words

( "You know zombies?" )
