So I'm reading another of the Eighth Doctor books, Camera Obscura, which is set in Victorian London. I'd skimmed it, and happened upon a bit where Fitz is fussing at the Doctor, who sarcastically says "yes, Da." Ha, I said to myself, remembering many Spike/Angel fics, I bet this writer's a Spike fan.

Then I get to this bit:

[Anji] was smiling politely at an earnest, puffy-haired young man in a brown suit, William somebody or other, who had been introduced to Chiltern as a poet. He was chattering on at her - probably reciting some of his no doubt ghastly poetry.

*dies of fandom collision*

(Well, vampires do exist in the Who universe, and Dingoes Ate My Baby have already been name-checked in one of the novels, so I suppose anything's possible...)

I don't watch Dr. Who, have never seen an episode but you're making me want to start...

Yep, there's a Fifth Doctor book where a rockstar character reels off his musical influences and the Dingoes are in there. Which promptly sent me round the bend trying to work out when the book's set...

Hee. It is the Fandom That Swallowed Me Alive, seriously. You have to love any show that suddenly decides it's going to do a vampire episode so has its main character basically announce "by the way, vampires are real, before my people were time travellers we were a race of vampire slayers involved in an intergalactic war with them... Got that? Good. On with the staking." And then it's never mentioned in canon again. Likewise werewolves.

I giggled a lot. And tried to remember which Spuffy BNF wrote a Doctor Who book, because I'm sure I remember one.

Romana the Vampire Slayer. It's so obvious.

Though if Giles had got Buffy dressed up in a schoolgirl's outfit I assume the Council would have had some stern questions to ask.

Okay. So Buffy-type-happenings exist in the Whoniverse, but so does online Buffy fandom? My brain, she hurts.

Oh, that's fantastic. And makes crossovers practically canon and thus kind of requires fic. And now I'm remembering the plotbunny [livejournal.com profile] katemonkey gave me, involving any and all possible combinations of Nine, Rose, Buffy, and Giles. Oh, dear.

Really? Cool. I wonder if I'd recognize their name.

I wasn't "in" the Buffy fandom, but boy did I ever read a lot of Spuffy fic back in the day. Dude. In fact, I've been recently re-watching Season 6. Everything before and including Tabula Rasa is so fucking gold. It's somewhere in the middle of Smashed, Wrecked, and Gone where it starts to go awry.

There is a rather brilliant Fourth Doctor episode called State of Decay which is onscreen crackfic, where we find out things like "Time Lords are honour bound to kill any vampires they might happen upon!" which makes Buffy crossovers almost mandatory, yes.

Clearly it was cut because Russell remembered Buffy is really real in the DW universe *g* (I am rationalising the fact that Andrew on Buffy is a Doctor Who fan. Obviously the Peter Cushing version still exists in the DW and Buffy universes...)

Well, for me, I tend to just go with what makes crossovers viable: take, for instance, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which stars Brad Pitt, but also features a character wearing a Fight Club movie t-shirt.

But that's just me. Other people might be, you know, sane, and not place high priority on crossover viability. *G*
