They accost you in cafes or shops to ask if pounds here are the same as British pounds (requiring the dull and complex explanation that yes, Bank of Ireland money is sterling but it isn't usually accepted on the mainland, probably because they think we're shiftless embezzling terrorists)
2. They treat the appearance of the sun breaking through the clouds as a normal thing, not a fearful and unprecendented event that requires quailing in terror and offering of tourist sacrifices to appease the sun-god.
3. They ride around in an open top double decker, peering down at the populace as if in a zoo.
4. Corollary to the above: they take pictures of the paramilitary murals, often while talking loudly and knowledgably about 'The Troubles', how awful it was, etc.
5. Amusing paranoid, ducking at every car backfire/popping balloon/anything that might vaguely sound like a bomb or gunfire.

on 2005-07-21 05:46 pm (UTC)The Odyssey arena - for geekery, again, because it has an IMAX and a multiplex and many places for food and arcades and pool tables. Also a nightclub, which I don't go to because it's infested with spides (chavs, townies, don't know the American equivalent)
The pub down the road from my student house. It has excellent, cheap food and, hurrah, no music.
My local library in my hometown. Yes, I can't believe I'm sad enough to put two libraries on this list, but I practically grew up in the place. It's tiny and wee and parochial and the librarian was terribly excited when I took out Tipping the Velvet because she'd read it and hadn't been able to talk to anybody about it, being how it was Filthy and about Lesbians.
...I'm stuck for a fifth. Must think about it.

The Five Doctors: yes, it's fanficy and bits of it make no sense, but eee! Five (well, four) of the Doctors together! Sarah-Jane meeting Three again! One grumpily sending Tegan off to make him some tea! The Master actually trying to help and nobody believing him!
The Mind Robber: weird and surreal. Medusa's in it. So's Gulliver. Two spends most of it on the verge of tears. It ends in a fanfic duel! Jamie loses his face so they can temporarily replace the actor!
The Curse of Fenric: Vampires! Ace losing her faith in the Doctor! The Doctor's faith in his companions driving back vampires! Ace getting THREE girlfriends-of-the-week, two of them evil she-beasts, one her own gran! Nicholas Parsons! The Doctor getting to say Ragnarok with about ten r's!
The Chase: I watched this last night and it just about bumped Ghost Light from this list. It's Ian and Barbara's last story and the Daleks are chasing the Doctor all over the universe, and they go to the Marie Celeste and a haunted house and the Empire State Building, and quite a lot of it is faintly ridiculous and the Daleks are *hilarious* - one of them is a bit dim and has a stutter and another seems phobic of the giant mushrooms on one of the planets, flailing whenever one comes near it. "AM I DAM-AGED?!"
Honorable mentions to Ghost Light, Battlefield, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and The Deadly Assassin. Apparently I love the funny, unpopular ones...

on 2005-07-21 06:09 pm (UTC)I just finished watching The Mind Robber last night, and loved it - especially the fanfic duel, and Jamie's new face, and the TARDIS blowing apart, and Zoe in the catsuit on the spinning console. And the Doctor all adorable and worried...

I love how pacifist he is, that he admits to being "an aging hippy", yet he's also this brilliant puppetmaster who manipulates everyone and works out what Fenric's up to and makes Skaro go *boom*. His speech to Morgaine in Battlefield, where he talks her down from causing nuclear was, is brilliant, as is his final speech to Ace about "somewhere out there there's injustice, somewhere there's tyranny, somewhere the tea's getting cold."
3. Five: I want to take him home and make him a nice cup of tea. I haven't seen enough of his episodes, but he's so earnest and sweet. "Brave heart, Tegan."
4. Four: I'm just starting to catch up on his episodes, but I can see why Tom Baker's most people's definitive Doctor. I've had Physics lecturers like him, same brilliant-but-utterly-mad grin and all.
5. Two: Just edging out Three; I adore Jon Pertwee but he can't quite match the hysterical line-delivery on "I'VE LOST HIS FACE!"

Knowing that I dislike walking, especially at ungodly pre-noon hours of the day, he went to Tesco before I woke up on Saturday morning and bought me the Harry Potter book. He has also previously bought me the Princess Diaries books, even though it made him look like a very shady character indeed.
2. He is a human-shaped treasure trove of Interesting and Amazing Trivia.
3. He asks vital questions such as "do you get the feeling Draco's in love with Harry?" and ships Harry/Mrs. Weasley, making reading said new HP book a more interesting experience.
4. He introduces me to new things, such as Buffy and Doctor Who, in the manner of a genial neighbourhood crack dealer.
5. He is going to be a Proper Pharmacist, meaning I can tell people he's a drug dealer without technically lying.
