Hmm. Is the word "gipped" or "jipped"? (Context: cheated, ticked off) My spellcheck doesn't recognise it.

ETA: Survey says 'gypped' and my spellchecker agrees. Thanks, all!

gypped

[identity profile] swmbo.livejournal.com 2003-12-19 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Technically? I think it's supposed to be gypped.

And now it has reached that stage of looking at it where nothing looks right.

[identity profile] mistakency.livejournal.com 2003-12-19 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It is commonly spelled "gypped", but my dictionary also lists "gipped" as another option.

I want to make love to your icon.

That is all.

It is considered non-PC, because "gyped" comes from "gypsy", making it a racial slur. Similar problem with "welshed".

Really? Oh, didn't know that...

That's why you have me. B)

Go to a bookstore or library and look up the AP Stylebook. There's lots of stuff about depricated usage in that.

I have a feeling that's an American thang. I think I've heard of AP Calculus and so forth, is it the same thing?

[identity profile] ludditerobot.livejournal.com 2003-12-19 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that AP. The Associated Press. Not Advanced Placement. It is the bible for proper language use in newspapers, and there's likely an equivalent form in Britain.

I went to J school in South Dakota, and the stylebook says that the use of the word "pow-wow" is depricated as a racial slur, but of course the exception is when it really was a pow-wow, featuring Native Americans.

Ah! Comprehension dawns.

And I love your icons.

Icon are fun!

And always glad to help with comprehension.

True it is gyped, but it's a racist term.

Kind of like when someone says Jewed.

Some people don't realize that.
I'm just telling you.

Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] ludditerobot pointed that out too, I wasn't aware of that (I'd always spelled it 'gipped' and never made the connection. I've never heard of 'Jewed', either). Have decided to go for a different phrasing. Thanks!

It's also important to point out that most people who use the term "gypped" don't realize that it's a racist derivative. People who use the term "jewed" are quite aware of the connotations, which is why you would not have heard it.

It's still proper to help remove gypped from part of our language, but I just wanted to point out that most people will be aware that you're not intending to use it offensively.
