Go to a bookstore or library and look up the AP Stylebook. There's lots of stuff about depricated usage in that.

I went to J school in South Dakota, and the stylebook says that the use of the word "pow-wow" is depricated as a racial slur, but of course the exception is when it really was a pow-wow, featuring Native Americans.

It's still proper to help remove gypped from part of our language, but I just wanted to point out that most people will be aware that you're not intending to use it offensively.
