I have a feeling that's an American thang. I think I've heard of AP Calculus and so forth, is it the same thing?

Not that AP. The Associated Press. Not Advanced Placement. It is the bible for proper language use in newspapers, and there's likely an equivalent form in Britain.

I went to J school in South Dakota, and the stylebook says that the use of the word "pow-wow" is depricated as a racial slur, but of course the exception is when it really was a pow-wow, featuring Native Americans.
