doyle: tardis (companion - ian)
[personal profile] doyle
I've run memes like this before for companions and for ships (and I'm trying to dig up links to those) and decided it might be fun to try one for all the episodes of old school Doctor Who. In the comments are threads for every story from An Unearthly Child to The TV Movie (actually, The Curse of Fatal Death, because I couldn't leave Lumley Doc out); reply to these comments with what you loved about the episode, whether it's favourite lines, moments, squee for the rubbish dinosaurs, character love, shippiness, screencap picspam, or just 'best episode ever'. No harshing others' squee, please - there are 160 serials linked, there must be some you loved... Loving on stories generally derided by fandom is positively encouraged.

For some help navigating, this wiki page has the serials in order.

If any have been missed, feel free to stick them on at the end - I've just realised The Myth Makers isn't there...

Ace+Baseball Bat > Daleks. Trufax.

Also, Murray Gold? This serial wants its creepy girl-child music back.

Ace pwns SEVERELY in this one. And it's an anniversary which I'm a complete sucker for. Plus the Nemesis statue is a more interesting Gallifreyan WMD than the Hand of Omega.

"Don't eat the soup, Ace."

This has it all. OK, by and large it makes noooo sense, but who cares? Ace pwning, the Doctor brooding, no less than *two* Very Camp Villains, death by dodgy SFX, murder mystery in a stately home, and on and on.

I'm so onto Moffat and his secret masterplan to take over as showrunner and end the series with canon Doctor/Master. A Nine who dresses all in black and gets romantically involved with his companion? A Ten who's rude and licks things? Hmmm...

(This one should have been entitled 'Hugh Grant; a far better Doctor than you'd ever expect' or 'Lumley is the only true canon')

I can't believe I missed this one out, because it's one of my favourites and I will curse the BBC till my dying day for burning it... it's a comedy romp about the siege of Troy; Blackadder decades before there was Blackadder. I love One's genius plans for getting inside the city (I believe a catapult and a very large paper plane are mooted).

I sat through this movie with a huge silly grin on my face. The plot may have been worthless, but Eight is such an amazing doctor!! I love his enthusiasm and joy.

Also: most favorite part of the movie --
Grace: I suppose you knew Madame Curie too.
The Doctor: Intimately.
Grace: Does she kiss as good as me?
The Master: As *well* as you.

Castrovalva is just...charming. It's the serial you want to watch on a late warm day with a nice cup of tea.

I loved the idea of it, I loved the characters, and there are so many moments...especially for the Master and Five.

The Master insisting that he has to see the Doctor ONE LAST TIME and throwing logic and sense out the window to try and get to him. Calming the minute the Doctor appears, and then being intimidated by this man who's been so vulnerable, because he knows.

Just. Yes. Love.

BARBARA AND IAN. Look at their very first scene together and tell me they're not in love. Just try it. I dare you.
Also, that beautifully eerie shot of Susan dancing alone in the classroom, and "I like walking through the dark. It's mysterious." They really did an excellent job of establishing her as strange and otherworldly.
The very first introduction to the TARDIS ever! Ian harping on and on about how it was just a police box! Barbara being all, "Yes, thank you, Ian, we're past that, can we discuss letting us out now kthx."
And finally, William Hartnell in all his cranky glory as One. Such a brilliant episode.

BEST. SCREENSHOT. EVER.

That ending. One of the best companion departures in Who.

Also, condescending Wagner-obsessed megalomaniac supercomputers FTW! And Benton attempting to lure in the maggots by saying 'Here, kitty, kitty,' and the Doctor reproaching him for not being serious enough is also wonderful....

ack. This was supposed to be a comment on The Green Death, in case that isn't obvious.
