doyle: tardis (companion - martha (smile))
[personal profile] doyle

Oh, I LOVE her. That was nigh-on inevitable - there are only about 3 companions across all the TV stuff, the books and the audios that I'm less interested in, possibly meaning I'm very easily pleased - but I thought Martha was wonderful, smart and brave and adventurous and compassionate and I can't wait to see more of her. Bring on the post-ep fic! And the fic about her siblings and family; I get the feeling they're going to be less featured than the Tylers but I liked them a lot, especially the cute sister and the stepmother who seems to bear an uncanny resemblance from Chantelle off Big Brother.

As for the story - loved the Vogons Judoon and their big marker-pen Xs on people's hands, and the weaselly JHO who could easily be the illegitimate English son of Wilson off House, and the vampire with a drinking straw and the Leather Stigs! (Top Gear, for the uninitiated) Beautiful moment when Martha was staring after her family in despair and suddenly the Doctor was there, watching her; just a lovely way for a companion to join.

Oh, and just on TVL "As soon as the Doctor sees Martha, he's thinking 'she could be the one' - he's attracted to her intelligence" - bloody hell, I knew Confidential would be shipping them, but they're leaping in with both feet, aren't they...! It was a lot shippier than I expected. As a multishipping h0r who got into this mad sprawling fandom in the first place because I loved the Nine/Rose subtext in Rose, I approve.

Next week's trailer: someone says 'hey nonny nonny!' I cracked up. Deliberate Blackadder reference, Mr Roberts?

ETA: the Doctor's reference to being in a nursery - dear RTD, the ignoring of Lungbarrow gives me great pleasure. Please continue. :)

Having no icon skills myself, I will go and sit patiently on [livejournal.com profile] dwicons till some turn up.

Oooo, I second that, despite the inevitable wanking that will follow.

I assume it'll get ignored by Lungbarrow fans, like every other reference the Doctor has ever made to his birth/childhood :)

The thing is, it's not, really. Lungbarrow sets out pretty clearly that these houses are intentionally set up to be giant nurseries. Sadly, the mention of nurseries is not so much with the rebuttingness. :)

In fact, the mention of a brother is far more a rebuttal of Lungbarrow than the nurseries...

I'm half surprised that I didn't see a ton of wanking last night about the offhand brother comment. IIRC, that was the first time *ever* he's definitively mentioned siblings.

For reals? Who said that?

Collinson, I think? Completely at odds with Rusty who said - and I quote - "the Doctor thought Rose was the most marvellous woman in the universe". I like the thought of BBC Wales having their own shipwar.

"the Doctor thought Rose was the most marvellous woman in the universe"

Thought in past tense, which he would do cos of that a bit creepy in a way thing where the Doctor's current one is his bestest friend ever.

Wandered here from [livejournal.com profile] lifeonmartha and felt the need to second - or third this:

Would it help if we collectively begged?

I love the books in general but I am not a fan of the looooms... (come to think of it, I forgot the reference to his brother, too!)

I'm a bit agnostic on them - honestly, I like my Who to have multiple conflicting explanations and absolutely zero answers, particularly when it comes to backstory, so I'll be a bit disappointed if anything is ruled out one way or another - but they are some of the best SF worldbuilding Who has had, finally getting away from "Oh, we're pretty much a human culture with human family structures and human power structures...", and Timelords being awesome genetic engineers is pretty much canon.

Would you believe that we watched it amid a sea of Warhammer and failed utterly to eat the pizza til it finished?

I would certainly believe that. I wish I had pizza...

There's some left?
Although probably not by the time you get back. There is cake though.
Cake of chocolately goodness. With slightly squiffy icing due to me dancing to the confidential. I bet I got some on the Warhammer. I got half the kitchen floor.

Martha is great, and her family's lovely - as well as being handled with a much lighter touch, so far.

The marker-pen X's were awesome, and really made the Judoon excellent, where they might just have been space rhinos in punk kilts. :)

the love child of Wilson & House & Cuddy, banished to England! Or something. The crack, it burns. That said, I really just wanted to ruffle his hair and pinch his cheeks and pit him against Hex. Hex would so win.

:)

dear RTD, the ignoring of Lungbarrow gives me great pleasure. Please continue. :)

I simultaneously quite like Lungbarrow and ignore it, seeing as it's obviously completely ridiculous.

Also, I find myself wanting to know the story behind why Emmeline Pankhurst stole the Doctor's laser spanner...

on 2007-04-02 09:00 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] pennski.livejournal.com
Ok I heard that as "Amelia Earhart" - who would at least have use for a spanner and whose possible misuse of it is why she disappeared?

It's a better theory than mine! Nearly sure he said Pankhurst, though... (and he does mention chaining her to the railings of 10 Downing Street in one of the Eigth books)

on 2007-04-03 06:57 am (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com
That makes so much more sense - but I'm pretty sure it was Pankhurst. I was listening out specially the second time because I wanted to make sure he said 'Emily' instead of 'Emmeline', wot is correct. Because I am a terrible, terrible pedant.

I am definitely looking forward to the fic...so very nice to have some fresh canon to put on the fire. And I shrieked with delight when the Judoon marked a Sharpie X on everyones' hands. I feel like doing that to my students as they come into my classroom tomorrow morning...shine a torch in their face and then mark an X on their hand...good lord, I'm a DORK. Of course, I live in the US so the kids would really get scared...

Let the ship sail...it's going to be a fun ride! So much fun to be had this season!
