I'm off work sick. Thankfully I'm kept entertained by Doctor Who fandom going nuts over the new promo pictures. I've seen Rose fans call Martha a whore, slut and a chav (oh, the irony!) based on what she looks like. Also accusations that she's a Rose clone. Mm, they're so alike I'll have trouble telling them apart!

More Xena is needed, I think. Curse the strange numbering system of the discs (seasons are split into two volumes each); the DVD-monkeys that blockbuster employ to send out the discs don't understand this so send out part 4 of a season instead of part 1. Poor confused monkeys. They'd rather be back writing Shakespeare.

I was reading that and have to ask, what on earth is a chav? I've never heard that term before...

'Chav' is the English word - in Scotland they're called neds and here in Belfast boy chavs are spides and girls are millies - and I am bad at explaining these things so will link to wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav)

Okay, I'm less clear than before! That one fan seemed to be using the term as synonomous for slutty, but according to wiki it means both white trash--which I can undertand--and someone who wears designer track suits (which sounds a bit yuppie-ish to me). It seems to apply both to the urban poor and to people who studiously follow fashion. A term that covers both Vicki Pollard and a member of the royal family leaves me confoozled!

Ok. The stereotypical chav is promiscuous binge-drinking white trash, so that covers the slutty bit. The designer tracksuits could be knock-offs; on the other hand, the chav in question could be a footballer's wife and so filithily rich that she and said footballer could buy up several small African countries wholesale. (Just because you're rich, doesn't mean you're not terribly vulgar. It's a British thing, perhaps).

Yuppies do not wear tracksuits constantly. Most especially not white or pink. The only place a yup would wear any sort of track gear is in the gym. Yuppie means professional. They live in the commuter belt and drive a Range Rover (SUV).

Enlightenment at last!

Ah! NOW I get it! That wiki article was unneccessarily long; the word "vulgar" was all I needed to draw a line between the two socio-economic classes that seem to be covered by this term. Thank you!

As for tracksuits, yuppies in the US wore them during all non-working hours during the mid-eighties. I'm sadly stuck in a time warp, and that was the image I kept getting while reading the wiki article. Also, I'm deeply saddened to know that SUVs are a world-wide blight instead of being restricted to the suburbs of big American cities. :(
