I'm off work sick. Thankfully I'm kept entertained by Doctor Who fandom going nuts over the new promo pictures. I've seen Rose fans call Martha a whore, slut and a chav (oh, the irony!) based on what she looks like. Also accusations that she's a Rose clone. Mm, they're so alike I'll have trouble telling them apart!

More Xena is needed, I think. Curse the strange numbering system of the discs (seasons are split into two volumes each); the DVD-monkeys that blockbuster employ to send out the discs don't understand this so send out part 4 of a season instead of part 1. Poor confused monkeys. They'd rather be back writing Shakespeare.

I am currently pondering whether I should report that thread to fandom_wank or not. Because it's so madly batshit, and yet oh-so-entertaining.

Can I go nuts over the new promos because the brown suit is gone!?! *weeps* It's not fair! I loved that suit!

Though I do wish they'd put Martha in something a bit better, too.

Hmm, I don't think the Doctor's had a whore for a companion before. That'd be interesting!

No one there seems to have noticed that the Doctor also has new shoes. I approve of the new burgundy (my favourite colour) Converse with matching tie. The blue suit might take a little while to grow on me, but I can see the potential in it and don't think that it's the end of the world, as many there seem to.

Definitely possible fandom_wank fodder.

I was reading that and have to ask, what on earth is a chav? I've never heard that term before...

on 2006-08-10 01:45 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com
'Chav' is the English word - in Scotland they're called neds and here in Belfast boy chavs are spides and girls are millies - and I am bad at explaining these things so will link to wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav)

Okay, I'm less clear than before! That one fan seemed to be using the term as synonomous for slutty, but according to wiki it means both white trash--which I can undertand--and someone who wears designer track suits (which sounds a bit yuppie-ish to me). It seems to apply both to the urban poor and to people who studiously follow fashion. A term that covers both Vicki Pollard and a member of the royal family leaves me confoozled!

Ok. The stereotypical chav is promiscuous binge-drinking white trash, so that covers the slutty bit. The designer tracksuits could be knock-offs; on the other hand, the chav in question could be a footballer's wife and so filithily rich that she and said footballer could buy up several small African countries wholesale. (Just because you're rich, doesn't mean you're not terribly vulgar. It's a British thing, perhaps).

Yuppies do not wear tracksuits constantly. Most especially not white or pink. The only place a yup would wear any sort of track gear is in the gym. Yuppie means professional. They live in the commuter belt and drive a Range Rover (SUV).

Enlightenment at last!

Ah! NOW I get it! That wiki article was unneccessarily long; the word "vulgar" was all I needed to draw a line between the two socio-economic classes that seem to be covered by this term. Thank you!

As for tracksuits, yuppies in the US wore them during all non-working hours during the mid-eighties. I'm sadly stuck in a time warp, and that was the image I kept getting while reading the wiki article. Also, I'm deeply saddened to know that SUVs are a world-wide blight instead of being restricted to the suburbs of big American cities. :(

Oh, wonderful (sarcastic). Mind you, I do see something in the Rose-clone idea, but it's just the photo style. TPTB in charge of photos definitely made them similar to those of Rose last/this season just gone. Same with costuming.

(And maybe it's just an easier transition?)

As for slut and chav, that's... interesting. From what I've heard, she doesn't entirely qualify. Then again, I forget their thoughts don't run similar to mine, ever.

From the fandom reactions, I'd sort of assumed that we'd had some news about Martha's character. Am I to understand, then, that all this hatred is based on her appearance and the fact that She's Not Rose? Good grief.

And as for Martha, I'm joining the "clone of Rose" bandwagon. It was the dark trousers and shoes that did it for me.

?!

Ah, jeez. I loved Rose and I will miss her, but I'm waiting to see the character of Martha on the show before I form an opinion about her. Poor Martha.

This is the same thing that went on when Eccleston was replaced by Tennant. There are still Nine fans who haven't watched Ten because they can't accept that he was replaced. Hellooooooo, do any of these people know the teensiest bit of history about Doctor Who? Like that's what's been happening for, oh, FORTY frickin' years? Try it before you diss it people.

I do miss the brown suit. At least he still has the Chucks and the coat. I'm wondering if they're going to go for a type of suit over the one in particular. I've been watching a lot of Third Doctor and he wears the same sort of thing (velvet jacket and ruffly shirt) but the colors change from time to time.

Well, unless its a horribly saturated photo, both his suit and her jacket are crimes against colour. And the hair is dodgy, but I'm suspecting that it may be a) the way her hair goes (won't do the floppy/curly thing that I always thought was the point of that style) or b) its at a really bad length for being up...

But not seeing chav. Although, she's meant to be a student or something? She can afford that coat?

What mir said: she might have a rich family. Or gets the jacket out of the TARDIS wardrobe room. Or she shops at the same place as Buffy, since I seem to remember her having loads of those coats while working at the Doublemeat Palace.

I love it. I love that people will always be upset about something. The new costume could be David Tennant naked, and people would be like, "OMG WHAT DID THEY DO TO HIS HAIR, INTERROBANG?!?! THAT'S IT, I'M BOYCOTTING THE SHOW NOW!"

*stares at Martha's clothes* Those are whore clothes? *stares at own clothes* I resent that.

I'm not too crazy about the whole outfit, but it can grown on me. And I really don't see Martha as a whore, slut, chav or Rose clone at all. I barely know the gal!

I do miss the pinstripe suit. It's hot.

Hahaha. I couldn't believe all the outrage over a new suit. I agree that he looks a bit washed out and it will take getting used to, but missing Rose is no reason to bash Martha (chav? honestly? do they HEAR themselves?) when we don't know anything about her.

Excuse me? Rose fans have called her a slut/whore/chav? Uh, I'm a Rose fan and to be honest I don't give two fucks about Martha - I'm simply living in denial that she exists until spring 2007 when I give into the temptation of new David Tennant material.

I miss Xena, so so so so much :(
