So Rose is gone at the end of the season. My immediate reaction was "dammit, didn't I make a bet with nos at some point that she'd be there till about episode 3 of season 3? I hope I didn't promise pr0n."
People who really adore Rose and the ship: I'm sorry, I know you must be upset and irked at people celebrating, but I do think this'll be good for the show. I'm Rose and ship-neutral - there are episodes where I love her/the ship madly and episodes where I cringe - but I've been really looking forward to seeing Ten with a new companion. One who's all his own and didn't travel with Nine first would be good, but I'm dying to have Jack back full time too. Two of them, please, Rusty? A boy'n'girl TARDIS team? Because going on past evidence - Ian & Barbara & interchangeable girl, Ben & Polly, Jamie & Victoria, Jamie & Zoe, Harry & Sarah, Tegan & Turlough, Fitz & Anji/Compassion/Trix - I like that setup very much indeed.
Or, indeed, two girls a la Tegan and Nyssa. Then there could be femslash? *hopes*
I doubt Rose will be killed off, whatever The Sun says. It seems too brutal for the kids - and yes, they did it with Adric, but he was one of three, not the sole companion/kiddie identification figure, and when they tried it with Peri they were forced into a crappy retcon. I'm guessing some sort of fake-out where she seems to be dead. But then, I'm in the minority that wants her to go home to her mum and realise her life is what she makes it, that she doesn't need the magic timeship to do something worthwhile in the world.
ETA: my housemate Kevin sez "if I had to guess, I would say the new companion will be played by... CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON."
I would *never stop laughing.*

on 2006-06-15 05:50 pm (UTC)I don't really know if I can see Rose going home after what she went through in PotW, but Rose/SJ would be awesome. Not that it would happen unless RTD overdoses on something. I'm kind of clueless as to how Rose will exit, though - if I had my way, she'd end up with Jack somehow, but there's Torchwood. Grump. I just don't think she'll die.

on 2006-06-15 05:52 pm (UTC)Rose/Jack = love. Flirty, snarky, definitely-not-monogamous time-travelling love.

on 2006-06-15 05:55 pm (UTC)No, that's what I want too - or at least for her to see that as a possibility. 'Cos it's a perfectly good ending, and I remain ticked at people who can't see that.

on 2006-06-15 06:06 pm (UTC)And I keep thinking Torchwood or UNIT would like someone who's worked with the Doctor. Particularly when she's protected the Prime Minister from aliens and so on.

on 2006-06-15 06:07 pm (UTC)Totally with you on that. That's what would make her arc work: POTW makes sense in its context, but does pretty much suggest that she can't have any purpose whatsoever as just some ordinary human on Earth, which is a depressing prospect for, well, all of us. Whereas Rose who has travelled and then learned stuff and then can use that to be a useful and valuable and productive individual, for herself, not just for him, and do Good Things at home? That's the ending she should have. I want her to take charge of her own destiny, too: not for it to be 'does the Doctor choose the Universe over her?' but 'what does Rose choose for herself?' Empowerment for the kidz and that.
I do wonder a bit at why they are telling us. I mean, they seem to be handling it in a slightly more thought-out PR way than the Eccles disaster, but they'd done a bang up job of just saying nothin' when the rumours bounced round over contracts and pay and then again at the start of this season. I liked that strategy.
I want Jackie to be the new companion. :P

on 2006-06-15 06:18 pm (UTC)Clearly, the BBC needs to be alerted to this, because it would be the best Doctor Who spin-off ever.
Oh thank you!
on 2006-06-16 01:42 am (UTC)The man in front of her desk was gorgeous, Sarah Jane had to admit that. But only to Rose, not to him.
He smiled at her, and she could almost hear the birds singing. It looked like he could, too.
She would definitely not admit that to him.
He said, "So you're the 'Smith & Tyler Detective Agency'? I thought it was traditional for private eyes to use 'Smith & Wesson'?"
"We tend to use cell phones rather than guns, Mister ..."
"Jack Harkness," Rose's voice came from the open door behind him. A year ago when they'd started the agency, Rose would have thrown herself at an old friend, just for the reassurance of seeing him. Now she still beamed at him, but instead of coming in, she leaned against the doorframe. She tossed him a banana, and it seemed to mean something to him, because Jack Harkness burst out laughing.

on 2006-06-16 02:07 pm (UTC)They should have dangerous adventures with evil villians, and silly adventures with wacky aliens, and Jack and Sarah Jane should have romantic adventures together (because really, Sarah Jane *deserves* some good loving from a time traveller, and I bet that Jack would be happy to oblige). And all four of them (Rose, Sarah Jane, Jack, and K-9) should make snarky comments about sonic this and sonic that. And they miss the Doctor, but they don't *need* him. Not like they used to.
Darn. I may have to write this.

on 2006-06-15 06:34 pm (UTC)I'm of the latter camp. I do hope she doesn't die though, then again it was only the Sun that reported that and I do try not to believe anything I read in the sun.

on 2006-06-15 06:34 pm (UTC)However, it does make me kind of wonder what'll happen... not just "how will she leave the show?" but how it'll affect the audience... one of my main little worries about the whole new series is how they've managed to build up Rose's backstory and family so much that getting rid of Rose means getting rid of a huge chunk of that too, if that makes any sense... though I mean, they've already got rid of Mickey, so I don't know. I'd kind of hoped that if/when Rose left Mickey would come on board the Tardis as the new companion, but I guess that won't be happening now x_X
Maybe she'll like... end up merging into the Tardis or something. Because she's HOMGSOSPECIAL and the Doctor clearly can't live without her, so maybe something like that?
Hrm, whatever happens, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out...
And dude, Eccleston as a companion would be the best thing ever XDDDD

on 2006-06-15 06:36 pm (UTC)I would like that too - and maybe the Sarah Jane ep was foreshadowing for that? (Though there's certainly been plenty of "Rose dies" foreshadowing too.)

on 2006-06-15 07:24 pm (UTC)I think they're going to introduce a boatload of little companion candidates over the next few episodes. It'd be a cute little promo: "Who does the Doctor pick? Find out on Tardis Control!" (Parental control on MTV where the parents say that the bf/gf is an asshat and give them new people to pick from). Oh, if Lynda with a Y had lived.

on 2006-06-15 08:30 pm (UTC)I don't think they'll *KILL* kill her -- not on BBC1 at 7 o'clock on a Saturday. If the show aired at 9pm on BBC3, then maybe, but I don't believe they'll go that dark. My current guess is that Rose may *technically* die, just for long enough to fulfill Faux!Satan's prophecy.
Yay to the idea of a girl/boy companion team: that would be a lot of fun, and a completely fresh dynamic for the new DW.

on 2006-06-15 10:40 pm (UTC)Oh, I want this to happen the most.
Although I just realized with Rose leaving, there may not be any more Jackie and I am very surprised by how sad that makes me. Dammit, I got really attached to Jackie.
And there will never be canon Tenth Doctor/Rose/Jack. Only in my dreams. Heh.
I do hope Jack does show up in Series Three and I am very curious about the next companion/companions.
Though I'll miss Rose, I hope her story ends in a way that feels earned. I think killing her off though, that would suck and my sister the Cuppy (aged 11) will kill me for getting her hooked into a show where her beloved Ninth Doctor and Rose died.
no subject
on 2006-06-15 10:42 pm (UTC)I'm surprised how attached I got to Jackie, too. Not as much as to Mickey, but then Mickey somehow became my second-favourite after the Doctor, which I could never have predicted back in the first episode.
no subject
on 2006-06-15 11:04 pm (UTC)But I'm still amazed by how much I will miss Jackie. When I found out she was in many eps of S1, after seeing Rose, I was not teribly happy, and then, I just loved her to bits.

on 2006-07-02 12:59 am (UTC)I really hate 'you must abandon the exciting adventures and go home and get a job/get married/whatever because that's what growing up means' ends to kids stories, so I don't want this. Especially because Rose, and I do love her, basically has zero concrete skills. And she's never shown any sort of interest in academics so the 'I'm going off to college and getting a real job/going to work for the peace corps' is just not very believable.
The goes-to-work-for-Torchwood ending would be acceptable, though.
