It's a funny story, the Doctor's Hogwarts scarf. It's a funny story because at first it doesn't look like a funny story--someone just knitted it for him. But he felt there was something wrong with that--the person wasn't really a Hogwarts scarf kind of knitter--so they investigated and found that in the far future, an even more batshit evolution of the Harmonians attempted to hack God in order to make Harry/Hermione a reality. This naturally didn't work so well, but the attempt did cause a bizarre forward and back shift in the timestream that means everyone who took or takes up knitting in a time period after the release of the books inevitably makes at least one Hogwarts scarf, even if they otherwise had no intentions to do so.

"Imaging... all those people... and all those scarves...."
