nos, you'll like this: Christopher Ecclestone in this month's SFX.

The accent that Shakespeare spoke when he originally wrote these plays was not RP. It's just become that way because that culture was snatched and turned into an elite area. I personally am against that... You see it in American sci-fi films. For some reason, white middle-class English is what aliens sound like. Bollocks! Bollocks, say I! Why do they always have to sound like classically trained... lavenders? When I was a little boy I watched Doctor Who I thought "well, if I'm gonna be brave and I'm gonna be a scientist, I'll have to sound posh." Now it means we can have what's patronisingly called a 'regional accent'... without getting soapboxy, I think that's great!

Go, Our Chris:) (indulges own regional accent, even if it's not as sexy as his).

I do love the variety of accents we're getting in the new show.
As well as the Hand Porn.

And wouldn't you know, the first thing I looked at on the SFX letters page was someone requesting that Ten have a "more neutral accent" *hurts self rolling eyes*

Swiss, I wonder?

Or a Tory.

EXTERMINATES them.

Good for him! And I want Ten to use his own perfectly nice and comprehensible accent (and no, of course that's got nothing to do with my being from the same area!)

I suspect it'll be relatively light (like Sylvester, really) if only cos I got in a taxi the other day and got told I "don't have a Paisley accent". Apparently we slip fast... *sigh* But yay, West Coast accent!

Indeed! ;)

Actually, is it just me, or does Chris Eccleston tone down his accent slightly for the part? It seems a little different from how it sounds on DW Confidential.

I reckon he does, dammit!

The speech pattern he uses for the Doctor is different to his own normal style. He says in the interview he can hear Russell saying the lines and that how he performs it.

Oh and Russell would make a good Doctor cos he has a leather jacket...

I love Chris, I really do *giggles*

*loves him a lot* (because while I'm in the US, I have one of the accents that nobody smart ever has in US media....)

The "lavenders" bit notwithstanding (cos, err, wtf? That's just classism-shading-to-homophobia), he's got a point. Even if Sylv had his own accent way before him so nyah!

Oh, and cos of your accent has the glottal-stop:

"Attack pattern delta" or "attack plan delta"? Cos over on OG a majority of southern or non-UK posters were convinced it was "plan", whereas from what I could see the more "northern" folk had heard a glottal stop and assumed "patter". (Which it so it, dammit...)

I heard 'pattern' but I'd have to watch it again to be sure.

I heard pattern, too, even though I don't have a glottal stop in my accent (difference betweeen Down and Antrim, what can I say), but I'm probably accustomed to it from people from up your way.

lavenders
...bzuh?

Hooray for accents, says the girl with the plainest one imaginable.

The 'lavenders' bit puzzled me as well, since it sounds potentially homophobic yet comes a paragraph before extended talk of his close friendship with the show's writer, Queer as Folk creator Russell T Davies...

I wasn't sure if it meant what I thought it meant, you know?

Oddness.

It's not a term I've ever heard, but the implication made me blink.

I think lavenders is just another term for "luvvies" - Kenneth Branagh types who lord over every syllable.

Uh huh, yeah.

Or what are refered to as "stage gays" - in that they aren't but act it cos that's what people expect.

Nice quote. :-)
Just wondering, how are you doing with your friendship ficathon fic?
Would it help if I gave you a deadline? I would really like to get all fics in by June 1st. Would that suit you?

Sorry to barge in like that, but I feel I should encourage the few remaining authors to post their work, so that everybody gets the fic they requested. Hope that's ok.
