A/N: Post “Not-Fade Away”
“You were dreaming again,” Illyria commented, sitting calmly in the chair as Angel let the room adjust itself and his conscious brain reassert its awareness. He was covered in clammy sweat—the only kind his body produced—and he had to remind himself that he didn’t need to breathe in order to stop panting.
The light was harsh in the low budget motel room and Angel groaned as he realized he was fully dressed and lying on top of the bedspread. To avoid looking at the other in the room, he rolled over and sat up to find himself face to face with his collection, spread out on the bed. This was what he must have been looking at when he dozed off.
Memories—a pair of glasses, a beat up stuffed rabbit, a pocketknife, a baseball cap, a lighter, a personalized coffee mug with a chip in the handle, an outlandish tie, a bottle of peroxide, a videotape made long ago, and so many other bits and pieces gathered from various sites when he and Illyria had returned one last time to the wreckage of L.A. Each item revealed a little its previous owner. Most precious of all to Angel were the photographs, reminding him, lest he forget the faces of the ghosts that haunted him now. Wesley, Gunn, Spike, Fred, Cordelia, Doyle…even Lindsey and Lilah were represented somehow. Lorne and Connor held a place too. Not dead, but still forever lost to him, Connor by Angel’s choice, and Lorne by his own.
“These…items,” Illyria asked, careful to avoid calling them ‘rubbish’ as she had done in the past, “why keep them if they are of no use and cause such pain?”
He looked at her, catching for a second the glimpse of yet another ghost before his eyes once again glanced away. For the same reason I keep you, Angel thought to himself.
