(no subject)

Every time my laptop tries to start it flashes a blue screen with white writing in the corner: too fast to read but it says something about /system and something being missing, corrupt or deleted. Then it restarts. Over and over again.

Fuck fuck *fuck*. Watch me panic as I try to remember whether everything for work is backed up (not sure about the new brochure - fuck.)

Oh hell. That's terrible...

*cries*

For once I'm not even so worried about losing all the fic (although obviously that's upsetting me too) but with being about to go away for a week I can't have lost all the work stuff, argh...

Gah...that is JUST what happened to Kovsky a week or two ago.

Is it Windows XP? It's some bug with the system...she had to take her computer in to get the data retrieved before reformatting cause there was nothing she could do. Try booting from the windows CD?

*clings* I think I'll let someone more technosavvy than me look at it. I'm terrified of making things worse.

You should try booting from a Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) CD. You'll be able to access the internet and stuff so you'd be able to mail yourself the important documents.

Thanks, checking that out now!

Blue Screen of Death?? *curious*

I may be able to help

I fix computers for a living.

You could try hitting F8 right after the Logo screen flashes and then either select Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration. If you get in through Last Known Good Configuration, you may be all set. If you get in through Safe Mode, go to Start, Help and Support, and select System Restore. Select a date and time before your system failed and have Windows restore it to that point.

If neither of those work, you could boot computer with your Windows XP CD and run a repair.

*hugs* The safe mode and last known mode didn't work, but thanks for trying!
