Fic question

Those things you keep food in, in the kitchen. To me they're cupboards. What do you wacky Yanks call 'em? I'm sure I know this but I'm blocked, all I keep coming up with is "closet" and I know that's wrong. For example, "Joyce opened the ____ "

I may or may not be going crazy. But I love writing this fic.

In the Summers' kitchen, they had cabinets. The closet-sized things in kitchens are what we call cupboards.

Obviously, the others who have replied on this thread have different ideas about what a pantry or cupboard is. The different definitions are probably a regional thing. Whatever you pick, just go with it. As long as it's in context you'll be perfectly understood.
