Tomorrow's the 12th of July - anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne. I know this means sod-all to anyone not a Northern Ireland Protestant but in my community it's essentially the 4th of July but far, far more irritating. I have to do family stuff all day.

All I know about the Battle of the Boyne I just learned from you -- that it happened July 12. Now I'm curious -- what makes it irritating?

I've been feeling like a stalker reading your LJ and taking quizzes so I friended you, and now I feel more respectable. Hope you don't mind a strange new friend -- and that your July 12th allows time for flash-fic completion.

The Battle of the Boyne was a bigass skirmish in 1690 - yep, over 300 years ago - where William of Orange and the Protestant forces fought with James and the Catholic forces. Protestants won and have been feeling very satisified with themselves (or :rolls eyes: ourselves) ever since. (my friend marymac is a history student and can no doubt spot several million factual errors in what I've just said *g*)

It's irritating because there are band parades all day (drums and accordions and similar not exactly my bag), and most of them insist on going through the same routes as they have for hundreds of years, even if that means going through all-Catholic areas and pissing the hell out of people. I hate this us-against-them mentality that's grown up over the last couple of years, because it used to be less polarised towards one faction of the community.

But going to my brother's house and eating lots will be fun :)

Basic, brief, but mostly accurate. The Orange Order have conveniently been ignoring the whole William-of-Orange-was-backed-by-the-Pope aspect of the affair for as long as they've been about. Being Catholic, I find that immensely entertaining. Also, it means I don't have to do the family stuff over the 12th and so bogged off to Witnness Music Festival in Dublin for the weekend.....
