Holden realised three things in quick succession: he was in a coffin; he was conscious, despite a recent and vivid memory of that British guy all but ripping his throat out; and that despite the consciousness, he didn't have a heartbeat. An experimental shove at the coffin lid revealed that either he was really strong or mom had really scrimped on funeral costs.

He thought about his parents, his girlfriend, and couldn't summon up much of an emotional reaction at all. First sign of a psychopath was lack of empathy.

I'm a psychopath, he thought. No - a vampire.
