What's up with author notes in the middle of the text?

I've seen this in quite a few fanfics I've read over the last couple of days. Stuff like, to give a made-up example:

'Spike and Buffy were slow-dancing to the song Iris (A/N: I love that song it is soooo kewl!1!! lol'

Can you imagine if published authors did this?

'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a large fortune must be in want of a wife. (A/N: My best friend says this is the best opening eva!!1!)'

'He drew a light breath and said lightly but softly: "my dear, I don't give a damn." (A/N:Sooooorrree to all who wanted a happy ending but this is what it had to be!!1!')'

ETA: since [livejournal.com profile] paratti asked...

' "Oh Cathy! Oh, my life! How can I bear it?" was the first sentence he uttered, in a tone that did not seek to disguise his despair. (A/N: This is my first novel & is way better than my sisters writing!!! Pleeeze R&R!!)'

Gah. Uber-annoying I agree. When I wrote a parody of badfic, I kept giving shout-outs lol. THOSE are the most annoying...besides the ones where they abbreviate something and then explain what it is for the lesser beings who don't get it. *snerk*

And oh man. The Wuthering Heights one...oh dear god. That's so funny. way better than my sisters writing!!! Pleeeze R&R had me nearly fall out of my chair. *giggle*
