Oct. 9th, 2006 03:09 pmBBC announces Life on Mars will end after series 2. I can't help feeling I'm somehow to blame, since I finally got around to watching it this week and have only just joined
lifein1973 (though haven't posted anything about it since I'm not beyond the 'flailing with love for Sam-Gene-Annie' stage). Buffy died the season after I got into it too! It's a sign! Possibly a sign that I should stick to the likes of Xena and Hercules, with their happily closed canons where the characters forever frolic in a suspiciously New Zealand-looking Ancient Greece and Eomer from Lord of the Rings has an awful bleached perm.
ETA: Also Sam Tyler/Rose Tyler = crossover time travelling gigantic daddy issues OTP, yo.

on 2006-10-09 02:30 pm (UTC)It's driving me mad trying to remember the ads from the 90s that parodied 70s cop shows, especially the one with a very Gene-ish guv and a younger officer involved in a car chase ("Please stop shouting, sir." "I CAN'T!")

on 2006-10-09 02:49 pm (UTC)Ah, that was the ad for the Nissan Almera. Phil Cornwell off Dead Ringers played the Guv character. See here (http://www.missingimages.com/thesweeney/thefts/thefts.html) for details...

on 2006-10-09 03:05 pm (UTC)sometimes it's a language barrier, believe it or not. and a lot of the cultural references don't translate. not everyone is an anglophile like me. ;)

on 2006-10-09 03:40 pm (UTC)That's one of my fears too, but maybe if we're lucky, they'll do it as a miniseries and then they'll have a definate beginning and end.
Doyle's right about the language barrier, and there's also a cultural one as well (basically, they're going to have to Zevon it up with lawyers, guns, and money) but still... the number of American writer/producers I trust to get this right could be counted on one hand, and I haven't heard Strazynski, Whedon, or Sorkin mentioned yet.

on 2006-10-09 03:01 pm (UTC)i love 'life on mars'. but i can see how the premise would get old after a while, as great as it is. and david e. kelley is working on a US version? i have mixed feelings about that. i guess we'll see if it flies.
ooo! wow, that would be a crossover i could get into. ;)

on 2006-10-09 09:57 pm (UTC)This is good news! As much as I love this show, I'm glad it's not dragging on. It means the creators have an idea how they're getting out of the situation, rather than just flailing behind smoke and unfocused shots (ala Chris Carter).
On the other hand, Ally McBeal creator David E Kelley is making a pilot based on the show for US audiences is not good news.
