Martha ficathon signups continue apace with a healthy 18 people so far, proving that one should never underestimate both the attraction of a laughably small wordcount and Doctor Who fandom's love of making up their own fanon (see: uni!fic, [livejournal.com profile] girl_doctor, fic about Shireen and Trisha, both of whom we know less about than Martha, etc).

[livejournal.com profile] livii and [livejournal.com profile] uktechgirl are giving me an unhealthy love for Harry. Though not enough to make me rewatch The Ark in Space, except for maybe the bits where the alien's made of bubble-wrap.

I got this in my email:

FRAGILE THINGS by NEIL GAIMAN:
http://www.harpercollins.com/books/9780060515225/Fragile_Things/index.aspx

The distinctive storytelling genius of Neil Gaiman has been acclaimed
by writers as diverse as Norman Mailer and Stephen King. FRAGILE THINGS,
his second collection of short fiction, contains thirty previously
published pieces of short fiction ¯ stories, verse, and an American Gods
novella¯plus one new piece written especially for this volume. Guaranteed
to dazzle your senses, haunt your imagination, and move you to the
depths of your soul, FRAGILE THINGS is a gift of wonder and delight from
one of the most unique literary artists of our day.

I can't believe I hadn't heard of this. [livejournal.com profile] marymac, you're fired. Can't help wishing it was an Anansi Boys novella, though; I listened to the unabridged audiobook while on a temp job not so long ago and remembered why it's one of my favourite books ever. Oh, Fat Charlie, you're made of win and need to meet the Doctor.

Ah what the frell, let's be a lemming - it's just 300 words anyway! *goes to sign up*

*reposts as accidentally used a 'facepalm' icon, which is just confusing if I use it in comments where I am not, in fact, facepalming* Hooray! And yes, I wanted to make the word count wee. I figured we're not likely to get epic fic at this stage, and it allows for one-scene jokes that would be stretched too thin over a bigger story.

That is true.

I tried to keep that in mind when I made my wishes.

I will do my utmost to see you are matched with someone who will write you ewok porn. It is my fandom civic duty.

Maybe the ficathon will produce Complex Martha Fanon so that we can all claim she's OOC when we finally see her?

Like what happened with Ten?... I hope we make it fanon that she likes ewoks.

18? I'm guessing it'd be the freedom that appeals. 300 words and a character without a canon voice as yet. *grin*

For some reason, this fandom loves canon OCs.

I've heard of Fragile Things, though I did dismiss it as probably containing stories I've read. I may buy it anyway, because his stories are entertaining enough.

Doctor Who fandom's love of making up their own fanon

Though I haven't signed up I was tempted by Nostalgia's pointing out that you can't write her OOC, so it's got to work on some level unless you give her 8 arms...

It sounds great...until you get to the poetry. I love Neil Gaiman, but in IMO he should have the computer ripped from his hands when he starts to write poetry. Why, Neil, whyyyyy must you tormet me so with your verses?

I'm about to embark on one of the longest Stargate WIPs in my life based on characters who have maybe 10 minutes of shared screen time between them (sadly, seven minutes of it belongs to just one of them, and the other two spent theirs giving important!information to the main cast). So fanon ahoy!

I'm still annoyed with Harry. I'm not going to explain, though there is a lot of love behind the annoyance. I need more Who icons *will probably say this quite often*

I love Ark in Space, for no good reason at all, because it's a bit shit. But Harry takes off his shoes at the beginning and thus spends the whole of his first proper space adventure in his socks, which is about the best thing in the world.

Plus bubble wrap. And that man being killed by his own hand. And Sarah in the little tunnel of metaphorical rebirth as the Doctor's retcon gf. Yay!

::cheers for Harry love!:: Harry is teh shit, yo.

Writing Martha was a blast, since you could go almost anywhere. I've written Shareen too, and it was just as much fun, though especially cos there were a few tiny, tiny tidbits of info available, from the Annual and the like. It's fun filling in the aps.

I love seeing love for Martha. Bless.

Ooh, I know what that American Gods novella is about - it was included in a fantasy complilation I stumbled across at my local library. I think the story was called Monarch of the Glen.

Are the audiobooks of Anansi Boys really good? I love rereading Anansi Boys. I still get all wibbly at the ending with Charlie on the beach. "My father wanted me to know about American presidents." *wibble*

But yeah, I'd love to get some audiobooks to listen to while driving home, that rush hour traffic sucks.

This is a random stranger replying to a very old post because I'm reading journals off my flist's flist, but I just saw this and had to comment:

Oh, Fat Charlie, you're made of win and need to meet the Doctor.

Yes, oh yes. This needs to happen so badly...
