Jun. 27th, 2006 08:52 pmI never posted my thoughts on Fear Her here, so:
(Oh, actually, pre-cut tag, a non-spoilery spec on the finale. There seems to be a popular theory going around on OG that it will be revealed in the finale that the Doctor is Rose's father. Call me a skeptic but if this turns out to be true, I will eat my house. And all the hats within the house. And my own head.
RTD already turned down that plotline in season 1, for one thing...)
By the way, post and comments have reference to That Spoiler that we all assume everybody knows by now. (And if you don't: turn the internets off now, because it's a minor miracle you made it this far, you won't last till air-time.)
I actually liked this one a lot. I didn't expect to based on the first few minutes, because the scripting and acting were both pretty bad and the music was back to plinky twee nonsense (I could understand this if certain bits of Murray Gold's score - like all of The Satan Pit - weren't so bloody good). But once it got going, with the creepy dad-drawing, and Rose being smart and proactive and useful, and the Doctor eating people's marmalade with his fingers and getting that forlorn "am I not meant to?" look when glared at - yeah, liked this one. The marvellous Nina Sosanya (Jenny! Bellino!) was thecherry silver ball-bearings on top.
Aw, I thought Rose was lovely in this one, actually. And "who's gonna hold his hand now?" - 'his', not 'my'. YES. Thank you. After "but what about meeee?" as Mickey left, I really needed that.
Oh, and "I was a dad once..."
First: yay, after the allusions last year, actual mention of his family! And I have to wonder why they brought that up. Or is it destined never to be mentioned again?
Two: no, it probably isn't a reference to Miranda from the Eighth Doctor books. Not without a huge amount of fanwanking and blatantly ignoring stuff said onscreen. Much as I adore her, and much as the canonicity of the books and the audios are open for debate, Father Time is among the illustrious ranks of Books Comprehensively Jossed This Year. Twice, actually: "I've never had a house" and "never really thought about money, how d'you get money?" don't really jibe with him living in a house and working as a business consultant for the eight years he was raising his daughter.
But people should read Father Time anyway, because I don't care it's fanficcy "the Doctor with a daughter", I love it far too much. Err. The fact that Miranda's first love is a boy who grows up to be her megalomaniacal - and goatee'd, I think? - arch-nemesis is entirely coincidental to my love and I'm sure any parallels to the Doctor and the Master were unintended by the author. *whistles*
Next week looks amazing. Saturday yet?

on 2006-06-27 08:08 pm (UTC)But I'm actually just jumping in to say that I will eat your hats for you. And then my hats as well. And such. (And she's not Susan's mother either FFS! *h8s on pointlessness of OG sometimes*)
As you were.

She's not coming back. Thay're not going to have nor have they ever had any sex. She's not pregnant. It's all rubbish.
(I still shout "look out for the baby TARDIS" every once in a while though, but no one believes me, but that's entirely unrelated spec)

on 2006-06-27 08:32 pm (UTC)OMG that is Teh Crazy. And Teh Gross. I'd go as far as to even buy him as Jack's biological father, because at least that would make some sort of fucked up RTD-things-as-one-canon sense, but...good grief. Just. Say no to the bad crack, crack-theorists.
...or, I could have just said: I'll eat all my hats, too.

on 2006-06-27 08:45 pm (UTC)I agree with you totally about this episode. I really enjoyed it, not the least for Rose's strong showing. But I've noticed that she does really well, is strong and confident and able to take charge, when the Doctor's not around. Ten is less a mentor to her and more of a mate, and we've seen how Rose is with her mates. I think she's learned all she can from him and it's time for her to move on. Ten needs an older companion, someone to keep him in line and be his conscience.
Hmm, Sarah Jane seems to fit that bill... ;)

on 2006-06-27 10:05 pm (UTC)I would like to state for the record when I started write An Earthly Child or any of my Rachel stories, I had no clue Miranda existed. No, really. I didn't. And now I have to avoid any and all books about her until I finish my (err i forget what a set of four would be) stories.
If it turns out to be true
on 2006-06-27 10:11 pm (UTC)I love dragees, and they're illegal in California. Woes.
I really loved "who's gonna hold his hand now", too. I think the point of "I was a dad" is to further wedge Rose away from the Doctor -- she knows almost nothing of his internal life, and he prefers it that way.

on 2006-06-28 09:13 am (UTC)I even did the cliched closing eyes, fingers in ears, lalala-ing during the spoilery trailer at the end of Fear Her. Unfortunately, between las I heard the words 'cybermen' and 'the last story I'll ever tell'. Bloody having to breathe.

Me too! I mean, that's what I thought. I've never seen any 1st doc stuff, but i'm sure it was his granddaughter. I just wanna know who her mum/dad [Doctor's kid] was...
And I've never heard of a) Father Time [but am definately going to search it out now] or b) that the Doctor is Rose's father. Gnargh. That would be...mainstreaming incest. Urgh, not good. I'll join in with the hats *waves hat*
