Jun. 17th, 2006 07:58 pmMm. Positives first: I liked the actors, I liked the original characters (I was actually very sad when the other Linda members didn't get unabsorbed), I loved Jackie. I didn't mind that the Doctor and Rose weren't in it much.
That said:
I didn't totally dislike it, but I was left pretty dissatisfied - I think because I love the central concept, an outsider's view of the Doctor, and not enough was done with it. That little montage at the start, with Mr. thingie's slide show about the Doctor - more of that, please! I got bored with the tedious band-larking-about and Elton dancing to ELO bits (it's my favourite song and I really hope this episode hasn't ruined it for me.)
Also, the revelation about why the Doctor was in Elton's house was both blindingly obvious (I was left thinking 'is that it?') and made no sense in connection with the rest of the story: Elton's mum died when he was four and it takes him forever to feel sorry for Jackie being abandoned... shouldn't he be, I don't know, just a tiny bit upset at Rose when he first hears Jackie's been left on her own?
Oh, and the Scooby Doo chase sequence at the start beats out the extended farting in AoL for the worst, most cringeworthy 'come on, the kiddies'll love it' bit in the whole series.
Meh. Some funny bits and I didn't hate it, but I thought it was about on par with New Earth.

on 2006-06-17 11:55 pm (UTC)That was what annoyed me most. The concept was cool, it had so much potential yet it fell flat on its face.
New Earth was better than this. That, at least, had comedy. Though I did like the chasing bits with the Doctor and Rose.
