Rushing in. using Kevin's computer again, and I think I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a new laptop. Will look into finances this week, hope I can afford it before Christmas. But, ooh, I've been reading the Doctor Who novel King of Terro (aka Turlough Gets An Anal Probe), which I've previously skimmed, and discovered the following:

- it has too many characters, a confusing plot, relies on far too much book canon and is not all that well written
- but it justifies its existence for three things:
- the Doctor's line "I was such a disappointment to my parents", because HAH, no looms (screw you, Lungbarrow)
- Turlough doesn't have nearly enough screen-time page-time but I love what's there (especially him going on the pull because if there's one thing he knows about America it's that the ladies like an English accent)
- when listing his favourite bands, a character name checks Dingoes Ate My Baby. CANON. FUCKING CANON. Even though I don't regard the books as canon, that SO IS. ([livejournal.com profile] connorbeast asked "are you going to look for the novels with Ian and Barbara's rock star son just to slash him with Oz?" Yes. Yes I am.)

???!!!!

HAH, no looms

That would make good icon text.

a character name checks Dingoes Ate My Baby.

Wheeeeee!

The anal probe bit (a red hot anal prode, no less) is quite astonishing. The author apparently wrote it to satisfy a slash fangirl friend who wanted to see 'Turlough tortured but in a good way'...

[makes note of that Doctor quote to use for later]

(screw you, Lungbarrow)

Ahh yes, it's always find it liberating to give Lungbarrow the finger every now and then...

Hee! That's fantastic.

And while I haven't read Lungbarrow, the very idea of it has always pissed me off. The line "I was such a disappointment to my parents" is so much more canonical sounding.

Holy crap I want to read that, just because it sounds so utterly horrible.

It suffers from:
a) being based more on the novels than the TV show so if, like me, you've never read the books you're left wondering what the hell's going on
b) too many pop culture references. I can just about buy the Brig being familiar with The X-Files but I can't believe Turlough knows who Cybill Shepherd is.

Plus the whole gratuitous torture of Turlough bit...
