Two things, First Doctor related:
1. Am watching The Romans and Ian and Barbara could not possibly be more in love. Also I applaud the fact that the first thing they do on being rid of the Doctor and Vicki for an evening is get drunk and lounge around on sofas looking as if they've either just shagged or are just about to. Or both.
2. Hee, found a fic where young!Doctor gets sorted. Although I object to Prydonian (Prydon?) being Gryffindor; considering we're told that it's produced more brilliant politicians than all the other Houses combined, and that every evil Time Lord we've ever seen has been Prydonian, it's so Slytherin. But eee, sorting fic, and Drax! Drax as a Time Lord Ron! There should be crack!fic.
(
m_butterfly, I owe you comments. Though they will be nowhere near as well-thought-out and interesting as yours.)

I did just watch The Rescue though, and Ian and Barbara OTPness!
One is so Slytherin it's not true.

(I just watched the last episode of The Romans. Ian and Barbara have a jokey little tussle over who's going to do the housework that's resolved when Ian gets her bent over the table and seems ready to give her a spanking. I have officially died and gone to heaven. The good one, with the beer volcano and stripper factories.)

No problem; technically I've owed you something for months. I'm just relieved I didn't kill you--I was looking at the post today and going, "32 comments and 16 of them are yours. Good god, she'll drown."
It's that meta famine I mentioned--and the fact I can still join in discussions easily but am having a horrible time starting ones of my own. If I wrote up everything I've got, it would probably take a dozen posts and an index to navigate.
Well, thanks to that aforementioned meta famine, anything that really tries is at this point gratefully accepted; the show is often pretty subtle and the fans have a tendency to not only overlook those subtleties, but to also try to insist on some... questionable things, which is probably why I got into meta in the first place: I had to start thinking about and then talking about these things because I couldn't find anyone else who was. (I'm not sure what to make of a fandom that tries to seriously insist that saying an action in an episode conveys familiarity with cocaine usage doesn't have any implications towards the character's debatable drug problem.)

I have a short Ian/Babs fic set during The Romans floating around here, I'll have to finish that.

(Ahahaha, Oz/Chewie OTP!)

(That and you are dangerously close to my age. Just two months younger than me, spiffyness)
And yes, The Romans is probably the shippiest Ian/Babs TV story of all time. Followed by The Keys of Marinus and Planet of Giants (Marinus for sake of the OTP fest that is episode 2 alone and Giants because Ian behaves like sad, overprotective boyfriend through most of it. Hehe).

And I've seen part 1 of Marinus, must go and watch part 2 right away.
Have you read the novelization of The Daleks? It has explicit Ian/Barbara, and while I didn't expect that in the TV version I was shocked to see Barbara kissing a man who is noticeably not Ian.

(*plug* I have a little one-shot fic that takes place in The Daleks noveliation continuity on Teaspoon actually */plug*)
Have you read many of the Hartnell Virgin or BBC Books novels? Some of them are very, very good and I will gladly give recommendations if you haven't read many. :)

I like Ganatus, really I do. He is nice, intelligent guy... but he's not Ian, darn it. Season 1 has this silly thing about Barbara having a few non-Ian flings, the insanity of which is thankfully stopped in Season 2. (Though I'm intrigued that Barbara has flings in the series and Ian doesn't. But that is probably a good thing as seeing Ian being smitten with anyone else would just be Wrong)

Me too. Though now I'm intrigued as to what would have happened if he'd gone along with them (aside from the Doctor grumbling about how rapidly his Ship is filling up with hangers-on)
And yes, Ian going after anyone else seems Just Plain Wrong - but since Barbara and Susan and the Doctor *all* get to have flings, it suddenly seems very strange that he doesn't. Hmm.

You'd probably get a Ganatus/Ian/Barbara OT3. ;)
I would love book recommendations, and will check out that fic of yours.
For Virgin Missing Adventures (which are sadly out of print, so you might have to search a bit) with Ian/Babs my most recommended are Venusian Lullaby (First, Ian and Barbara only, it takes place between "Dalek Invasion" and "The Rescue") and The Plotters (First, Ian, Barbara and Vicki).
Venusian Lullaby is dark and gothic and reminds me quite a bit of C.S Lewis' space trilogy. It's probably my favorite Hartnell novel at this moment. The Plotters reads almost like a satire of Season 2... it is piss funny, with a great plot and colorful characters. Highly enjoyable. There are Ian/Babs shippish stuff in both, but 'tis rather subtle.... they masquerade as husband and wife in The Plotters though (in fact, they do this in quite a few of the novels and short stories), which is amusing.
For the BBC novels, I would recommend The Witch Hunters(First, Ian, Babs and Susan), City at World's End (the same) and The Eleventh Tiger (First, Ian, Babs and Vicki). City at World's End is nice because it really feels like an actual Season 1 story, more so than probably any Hartnell novel published. The Witch Hunters is a historical novel surrounding the Salem witch trials and it is really powerful, gripping stuff. And The Eleventh Tiger is probably the most shippy Hartnell novel to date, since it actually has a scene of Ian/Barbara snogging... so you might want to check that one out. ;)
Also of interest is The Face of the Enemy, which is actually set during Third's era but features married Ian and Barbara working with UNIT. They get a lot of exposure in the book, and the novel itself is quite good. (It's kinda a sequel to "Inferno", amongst other things)
Also, there's Campaign. It's a BBC novel with First, Ian, Barbara and Susan by Jim Mortimore that was ultimately rejected, but then self published by Mortimore for a while. It's uh, rather indescribable... its like Season 1 on lots and lots and lots of crack. There are reviews on the online Doctor Who Ratings Guide that can probably describe the book better than I. 'Tis really good, but freaky-weird stuff. Might be real tricky to get a hold of though... (I got mine off eBay)
*rereads what she wrote* Ye Gods, I might just make a list of novels and short stories with Ian and Barbara and post it on my LJ. I keep forgetting how much has been published.

I'm in the middle of reading it right now, coincidentally! There shalt be review/comments on my LJ when I finish...
