Jul. 18th, 2005 09:57 pmI'm without much computer or internet access right now. So, err, still owe various people a Boone/Shannon story which is halfway done, and an Anya/Dawn/Gunn story that isn't (I've started it about ten times. I was *dreaming* about it the other night, except my dream was comedy hijinks and I need angst, dammit.) In the meantime, I've read the Half-Blood Prince (loved it. Absolutely loved it, easily my favourite of the series) and watching lots and lots of old-school DW -
- The Time Monster should be called Jo and the Doctor are So In Love and Incidentally The Doctor and The Master Totally Did It Once At University. I suppose that wouldn't fit on the cover of the video, though. Seemed to be overlong, like a lot of Three's stuff, and was it in Pertwee's contract that there had to be a car chase every week? But I love the Master and there was a lot of good background stuff about the TARDIS's telepathy (I love the Doctor getting stuck inside the vortex. Is that Troughton's voice under Pertwee's when the TARDIS is projecting his thoughts, or was I imagining things? I did love "err, those are my subconscious thoughts, Jo. Don't listen to them, will you? I'm not very proud of some of them." And the Doctor dithering over 'force a time ram, killing self, Jo and the Master' vs 'let the Master unleash an entity that will destroy the entire universe' and Jo having to make the decision for him. Ha, "I could save the world but lose you" was nicked from that moment, I bet.
This episode had naked Benton, and for that alone it is a classic.
- I loved all of the Seven and Ace stuff. And, and, there was a werewolf! And a scary man made from liquorice allsorts!! (I knew there was some reason I hate those sweets and was always vaguely terrified of Bertie Bassett. Must be a subconscious thing from seeing this as a kid - I'd have been four or five when it was first broadcast. Survival, on the other hand, explains my housemate's recurring childhood nightmare about "Sophie from Corners being chased by a cat-person on a horse". I think he's quite relieved, it would seem like a symptom of psychosis otherwise...)
But yes, Seven and Ace. Their Platonic Love Is So Canon omg. I adored the part in Battlefield where she admits she gave Morgaine the sword and the Doctor's just relieved; "mystical swords are all over the place, Aces are rare." I may have melted. As I do quite frequently in the early UNIT episodes when the Brig's around, but that's quite different.
Ace is adorable in general, especially her insincere assurance that she's given up explosives ("and I'm a better person for it, Professor.") Very interested in the hints throughout Seven's run that the Doctor's not what he seems, the mentions of Rassilon and Omega, the implication that he was a contemporary of theirs. And Seven takes out both Skaro and the Cyber-fleet and gets back the Time Lords' most powerful weapons for them; I had to wonder if he knew the Time War was coming, or that something was going to happen, at least.
- The Deadly Assassin, despite having the most redundant title in the history of television, is brilliant for little canon backstory stuff about Gallifrey. Soooo, the Time Lord school is divided into different academies, is it? And the Doctor was in the Prydonian Academy, which apparently produces the brilliant, high-flying Time Lords but also the evil ones like Borusa and The Master and The Rani?OMFG THE DOCTOR'S SLYTHERIN. I need more backstory, and possibly fics where the Doctor - well, Theta Sigma at that point, I suppose - and the Master and the Rani bunk off lectures to bitch at each other and do sex. Because they did.
Ack, housemate who owns this computer - the only one in the house - is back, so I must run. *goes to finish Destiny of the Daleks*

on 2005-07-18 10:08 pm (UTC)I've rather thought of it the other way up - 7 fired the first shot in the Time War and didn't know it.

on 2005-07-22 06:30 pm (UTC)I just watched Ghost Light last night, and when that moment happened, I found myself holding my breath! Maybe Seven/Ace aren't so unshippable after all...
