With the internets/my laptop out of commission for most of the weekend I watched me some old school Who:

Ghost Light

This is the one people seem to have trouble following the plot of, isn't it? Err, why? I thought it was weird and brilliant and I love Control, who wants to be a 'ladylike' (and Ace doing a Professor Higgins) and the creationist minister who gets turned into a monkey and the creepiness with the mesmerised relatives and the discarded husks. Oh, the Neanderthal butler, too. Light could have stood to look a bit less like Lionel Blair but I was impressed at him turning the policeman into primordial ooze.

Seven's a wee bit of a manipulative bastard, isn't he? Bringing Ace back to the house she burned down when she was 13. ("I wish I hadn't done that... wish I'd blown it up instead." There's a reason Nine is a manwhore with a fetish for nineteen-year-old girls, you know, and I think it's Ace's fault. She will explode things and then wander around looking terribly pretty in that dress.)

I refuse to ship Seven/Ace, by the way. Even though he has that line about hating unrequited love and he just looks at her and I may have shrieked in horror at a potential 'ship. They're my One True Utterly Platonic Pairing and between this one and Remembrance I need to see all the Seven and Ace episodes *right now*.

Remembrance of the Daleks

Oh, Ace. Ace, Ace, Ace. Ace is so Nine's perfect woman cool. "Give me that nitro 9 you don't have in your bag." Heee. And she takes on three Daleks all by herself, admittedly with the assistance of the Baseball Bat of Omega.

I love the continuity stuff in this and how it fits with Bad Wolf/PoTW: the transmats, the Daleks using a little girl to interface with the computer. It all ties back to the First Doctor too, what with them being at Susan's school in 1963 a few days after One's disappeared with Ian and Barbara. I was in full giddy geek mode even before Ace turned on the TV to hear "and next on the BBC, we continue the new science fiction series Doct..." The meta, it kills me. I bet it was the Peter Cushing Doctor.

Seven talks about the creation of the Eye of Harmony and the foundation of Time Lord society as if he was there along with Omega and Rassilon ("we had the hardest time getting the prototype to work", only to correct himself with "they" when Ace questions his wording). Hmmm. I know it's book canon that he's possibly the reincarnation of someone called The Other, is that ever hinted at in the rest of the series?

Seven made Skaro go boom! Um, is this why the Daleks go to war with the Time Lords? And I notice he's still President. And that he's 900 years old. Sooo, either Eight lasted about ten minutes or Nine's rounding down his age to make himself sound younger?

Adam Davros surviving seemed a bit crap but I've heard that's a condition of using him, that he always has to make a miraculous escape. Or something.

The Ark in Space

I've only seen one episode so far but I have to ask... am I supposed to hate Harry? Because, really, come back Adric, at least you made me giggle inappropriately with your teen strops. I also get the feeling this was not a good intro to Sarah-Jane, since she appears to exist only to faint and be a bit useless.

I agree with you about Seven/Ace being the One True Utterly Platonic Pairing.

Thirded.

Platonic pairings and aging

me three on that! Although I have a few more platonic pairings than just Seven/Ace. I'd also count Three/Jo Grant amoung them too, come to think of it.

BTW, the Doctor's a hell of a lot older than 900! In one of the first novels for no 8 (Vampire Science) he mentions that he's 1200 and something. Also, after the desctruction of Gallifrey, he spent 100 years as an amnesiac on Earth, to recover from the trauma. So I think the 900 comment is just because Russell T Davies hates Paul McGann (or so I've heard) and is trying to ignore the existence of the 8th doctor altogether.

Well, even if you don't take the books as canon, he has to be over 900 - right at the start of his Seventh incarnation the Doctor said he was 953.
