I've mentioned before that I love the old 1950s Lois Lane comics because they're gloriously awful with some of the most ridiculous writing and plotting ever - but sometimes I just feel angry on behalf of any girl who read these at the time. Bad enough all the comments about Lois wanting "what every girl wants, a husband, house and babies" but when the titular character gets lines like "any girl would rather have a pretty face than a super brain - if she's really smart!"... *fume*

I am amused that every letters page has someone calling for Lois to get a good spanking, though.

I use your post as a random springboard of association to mention my lingering trauma at "I Love Lucy." You know, when Desi spanked her? So so very disturbing to me as a female person. But what's worse is that I didn't *take* it so for the longest time, because I first saw it when I was young and impressionable--it wasn't until rewatching later that I felt a frisson of disgust. Gah.

I'd like the Sam Carter in my icon to go back in time and kick Desi's patronizing ass. (Though to be honest, Lucy wasn't all that sane and I'd have smacked her a good one myself.)

Um, wow. I *so* never saw that episode of "Lucy."

Hee, I'm the opposite - never seen an episode of Lucy but I've seen clips of Desi spanking her. (I don't think The Lucy Show was ever on here, not that that stops [livejournal.com profile] connorbeast and me from using "Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do" as one of our standard greetings)

Cough I totally found that hot as a kid cough. But, yes. Disturbing and slightly amazing that that was ever acceptable. I've seen a coffee ad from the same era where a man's spanking his wife, with a tagline something like "don't buy your man the wrong brand"...

Hmm.. These days I wouldn't be overly surprised to see that ad brought up to date.
Probably would end up being a couple of S&M afficianados in gimp masks (gender probably not of any great importance) with the tag line "the brand that guarantees a good time" or some-such randomness...

And let us not forget The Honeymooners and their stance on spousal abuse...

"Straight to the moon Alice, the Moon" Blam. Alice cries herself to sleep and plans to leave him some day.

The same Lois Lane that's fiercely independant and 'don't need no scrubs'? How very disappointing ;)
