(no subject)

Why am I only discovering Casanova now, three episodes in? (With one left to go, is that right?) Russell T Davies' status as my favourite TV writer is confirmed. (Casanova, Queer as Folk, Doctor Who, The Second Coming - love them. Bob and Rose - really disliked it, but am possibly in the minority.)

I may have bought all of the Jeeves and Wooster novels. And I only have one episode left to watch of the TV series. And I'm wondering whether I'd go to hell for doing either a Buffy or Doctor Who crossover.

And since it's pointless poll day, today's hot debate in my house is all about valets:

It's a toss up between Jeeves and Bunter for me (so I didn't vote). :-)

John Gielgud's butler from Arthur. I want to say his name was Alfred, too, but I'm pretty sure that's not right. Darn, what was his name?

Vincent Garber played a butler once on Frasier, too. I'd go with him.

Hobson, so imdb tells me *g*

[identity profile] collinwood.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
My choice would have to be Bunter from the novels of Dorothy Sayers.

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ashamed to say I've never read those books, but I'll have to look them up...

[identity profile] collinwood.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
There have been a couple of different adaptations for television, seen on the "Mystery" series here in the US, though they were produced in the UK. If you can find it, start with "Clouds of Witness."

Do! Do! Do! They're brilliant.

[identity profile] cherusha.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted Jeeves, but only if Bertie is part of the package too :P

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I just watched the episode where Bertie nervously tells Jeeves he's engaged to Florence Craye, and there's that loaded silence, and then Jeeves offers his congratulations, and there's something like:

Bertie: I'm glad you're taking this well... what do you think of her?
Jeeves: It's not my place to say, sir.
Bertie: I know it's not your place to say. Doesn't usually stop you.

They are *so married*.

[identity profile] cherusha.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, ooh! It's that episode where Jeeves sabatoges their relationship without Bertie's knowledge, isn't it?

And at the end, he's all like, "She just wasn't your type, sir," or something like that.

So, so married!

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! And Bertie almost fires him! And Jeeves looks so upset! (Well, for Jeeves) But only seconds later, Bertie realizes that she's a junior version of Aunt Agatha and repents, and all is well.

[identity profile] cherusha.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Jeeves gives such great, subtle reactions to everything Bertie says. Must find excuse to watch this eppy again!

[identity profile] zoicite.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
i need to catch up! i just just finished the episode where Bertie grows a mustache to prove who is the master!

Man, LJ is being bizarre today. Or maybe it's just my computer.

Baldrick. But only in series 1, when he's actually smarter than Blackadder.

Jeeves all the way. He's awesome.

Oooh, I want to watch Casanova! I wonder if I can find torrents anywhere. Hmmmm...

Have to go with Jeeves, although the valet from Arthur was very very cool too! The only problem with Jeeves would be, simply, that he is, in the best possible way of course, evil. Free will can go out the window when he's in charge. You *will* wind up living the life he wants you to. But, that said, he will have chosen a life he knows is best for you and that you will enjoy, but still... LOL! Plus, I can't imagine Jeeves going anywhere without having Bertie somewhere nearby. They are so married. *grin*

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Even more so in the series than the books, if that's possible. It's interesting that in the very first episode Aunt Agatha's urging Bertie to get married because he needs someone strong and responsible and able to take care of him, and Honoria says she might be able to make something of him - a line Jeeves repeats almost word for word in a later episode *g*

Heh, I recently rewatched that first ep. And as Aunt Agatha was describing the traits of the ideal partner for Bertie, I was nodding to myself and going 'Yep, that's pretty much Jeeves through and through'. And are you referring to that episode where we finally see a dinner at the Ganymede Club? And all the valets discussing their masters? Hah! Oh, I love and cherish that scene! 'He's coming along nicely.' LOL! Yep, Bertie and Jeeves, joined at the hip, forever *nods*

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Mervyn Bunter, of course. Because he was used to dealing with intelligent crazy people, and could run a darkroom.

Julia, going for compensatory skills, you see

[identity profile] akadougal.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Casanova is only two eps in - there's three altogether as far as I know. Is very good - although last weeks ep was more... shocking? There was a great deal established that was picked up on this week, although they did a fairly good job of recapping any important info.

Also, my adoration of Peter O'Toole knows no bounds.

[identity profile] zoicite.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Boone from Lost (connorbeast acknowledges that he can probably barely put his own clothes on, but says half-clothed Boone is no problem at all)

HA! so true.

[identity profile] quinn222.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Bunter, from the Lord Peter novels.

[identity profile] paratti.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
RTD is God.

And I'm thinking there should be a Jossverse/Dr Who ficathon.

Someone, somewhere (*cough*Doyle*cough*) should most certainly write Dr Who/Jossverse with Illyria...

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh. With Illyria's powers, she'd definitely be interested in a Time Lord...

[identity profile] paratti.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And Rose will be even more jealous than she was of Tree Woman.

You knowyou want to do it.

[identity profile] paratti.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

[identity profile] greensilver.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted for Boone, but only because of the "hot poolboy" aspect. And if I'm only going with that, perhaps I should've nominated Chase. *g*

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2005-04-11 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Chase left the priesthood after shagging Boone in a poolhouse at a party.

He so did.

OMG Owen Burnett, from Gargoyles. Best. majordomo. EVER.

Yep. Being the Puck makes him even more the best majordomo ever.

I wouldn't worry about missing the first episode of Casanova as the DVD will be out on the 23rd of May so you should be able to see what you missed then. Speaking of late entries into shows I finally got round to watching an episode of House today and I can't believe what I've been missing out on. House is like Dr. Cox but ten times better.

I voted for Alfred because i think he's the best butler in the history of butlery.

Alfred for me. I was raised under the belief that Alfred is the real power behind the Bar-Goodness. ::bows to Alfred::

Voted Jeeves but only Stephen Fry as JEeves. Cause its Stephen Fry. And he's cool.
