He was drunk enough to be blatantly hustled at pool, drunk enough to acknowledge to himself that he was more than tempted by the offer; and sober enough to realize exactly why tempted was as far as it could go.

"Maybe you've had too much to drink," Anya stated, now upset by the mention of Xander. "We're not together. We won't be together. Why should you care about Xander right now?"

"Because he would care," Giles said. "If we were to..." He wasn't quite sure what to do with his hands, and found himself leaning awkwardly back against the table. "No matter how much we might like to, it wouldn't be right."

She had a smudge of chalk on her cheek. Automatically, he reached out to wipe it away.

She really was very beautiful.

Anya's lips were shaped into a small frown, her lower lip jutting out into a pout. She wished that he didn't care about what Xander would think or feel. In fact, she wished that she didn't care either. But wishes never seemed to come true for her. Ever. She was the one who delivered other people's

She leaned in slightly towards his touch, her cheek resting in the palm of his hand. Even though she didn't want to hear what he was saying, she did understand.

"Giles..." She breathed, beginning. It didn't seem any kind of fair.
