My laptop keeps freezing and/or bluescreenofdeathing whenever I try to hook my ipod up to it. I thought it was a space issue on the laptop, but I've gone from 1GB free to 10 (of a possible 40) and it's still happening. This is very annoying. Especially since I can't seem to find how the hell to run scandisk on XP.

disk cleanup THEN disk defragmenter
this might help, because when your computer has lots of fragmented files, it can bog it down. If you just dumped 10GB of stuff, it's likely that you are fragmented.
