Three thoughts on Troy:

1) That was a bit shit, really.

2) Did the fucking fuckers fucking retcon Patroclus? "Cousin"?! Rather than "he whom I valued more than all others, and loved as dearly as my own life"? Blech.

3) I really want to read an Achilles/Patroclus Verona Beach AU.

Maybe they think we're rready for incest Achilles/Patroclus. Or that's how they called it those days...

It's been a while since I've had a cousin.

Yes, it was. They changed pretty much every part of the original myth, leaving only the Trojan Horse. And that just ended up looking ridiculous.

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2004-11-17 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
We were actually surprised when the horse turned up - so much had been changed that we just assumed it'd be left out.

It was very wrong, and I kept pointing out things that were totally cracktastic and driving Rob crazy. However, I did fall in love with Eric Bana's take on Hector. I can't help it!

He was great, wasn't he? And attractive, let's not forget attractive. ;)

"Cousin"?!

This is why I refused to see this movie. I mean, come on.

Perhaps I'll see it on video someday. When I'm really bored.

Retcon?

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, my comics geekery is showing - retroactive continuity, when canon's rewritten. Smallville retconned Lois and Clark's relationship so they knew each other in high school, for example.

Aha. Neat!

[identity profile] harmonyfb.livejournal.com 2004-11-17 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
::snort:: It sucked, no doubt.

Except for the fact that there were acres & acres of half-naked and nearly-naked manflesh. Mmmm.

And that scene with Achilles and the knife? ::dies::

By the way - go here (http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=supersloane) and look at the second icon down on the left. You'll sporfle. ;)

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I love that icon.

And yes, the half-naked men did somewhat save the movie for me, especially the rather lovely Mr. Pitt, but I ended up fastforwarding the last 45 minutes to avoid anything that didn't have Achilles or Hector. I'd worry that I missed some crucial plot, but meh.

I had no such luck - we saw it in the theater. Although, if you fast-forwarded through Peter O'Toole's scene w/Achilles, make sure you rewind and watch it. That man is amazing.

Plot? ::snickers:: It just infuriated me (and every other history buff in the audience - Briseis kills Agamemnon?!? Have they the BRAINWORMS?)

But the scene where Briseis has the knife to Achilles' throat, and he slides his hand up under her chiton....uhhhhh. I should probably worry about this thing I have with weapons. ::laugh::

[identity profile] dualbunny.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
If you pretend the movie *is* an AU, it's easier. I can't lie though. The pretty pretty men were really why I went to see it. Plus dead Achilles was pretty.

[identity profile] kattahj.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks to Troy, "cousin" became the funniest word of 2004. Even to me, and I haven't seen the film.

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
*g* The line "he was his cousin" got the biggest laugh of the movie in our house.

Things I'm surprised Hollywood got right

[identity profile] h0pal0ng.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
1) Achilles Heel - I was so sure that they were going to fuck things up and have a happy ending, but they didn't. Hooray!

2) Peter O' Toole's Priam - Not sure how close to the myth, but a superb characterisation from a great actor.

3) Eric Bana's Hector - Again brilliant character. If he had somehow survived, I shamefully wouldn't have cared about the myth and just cheered.

4) Brian Cox's King - (shamefully I can't remember the name) - Again a villian you love to hate.

[identity profile] kraken-wakes.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Troy. I was so disappointed. Eric Bana - amazing. Peter O'Toole - superb. Sean Bean - really not enough of him and what the fuck was up with the ending. Not even a suggestion that it might take him a little while to get home.

Brad Pitt? Clearly they'd subsituted a cardboard cut out for him. The Trojan Horse was less wooden.

[identity profile] harmonyfb.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sean Bean - really not enough of him

And I'd have traded a shot of Sean Bean's naked hipbone for all the naked scenes of Brad Pitt. ::pout::

[identity profile] kraken-wakes.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my yes.

[identity profile] flyingtapes.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Did the fucking fuckers fucking retcon Patroclus?

Yep. Though when this prem'ed in America, we mocked the hell out of that. I saw it twice in theaters for various reasons, and it was so. damn. long. that I went and saw the tail-ends of two other movies (A Cinderella Story and Mean Girls) and still got back in time for all the nekkid hotness and fighting.

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad we not only rented it but rented it with free vouchers, so no money was actually spent. The nekkidness was very very nice but I was still beyond pissed off on Patroclus' behalf, and therefore resenting every second of screentime given to Briseis (none of us could remember her name, so [livejournal.com profile] connorbeast renamed her Tartacus. For we are juvenile.)

[identity profile] flyingtapes.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
::snork:: Juvenile, but funny.
