Remember to have a look at the Glenn/Mal lookalikes poll. Glenn must be reminded how much he looks like Mal on the hour, every hour.
I'm a little uneasy at the whole concept of this "new direction" for Angel next season. The show seems to change every year (the addition of Gunn, then Fred, then Connor and Cordelia's evilosity) but this sounds like a radical overhaul's coming. I have a feeling Angel's going to be human next year, because it'd make little sense to have two souled vampires if James Marsters moves over (and from Joss's point of view, if he wants JM on a spinoff it makes sense to keep him with ME for a year and stop him being signed to - god no - Andromeda or something).
Personally, I don't want to see Spike on AtS. Never have. I don't think there could be a spinoff based around him either, though he could certainly be a main character on a Faith or Willow or ensemble show. To quote JM in this month's SFX "what would you call it? 'Not Angel'?" And I'm speaking as one of that annoying segment who loves Spike's character and thinks JM is a terrific actor. But anyway, on a move to AtS: the slash potential alone, what with Spike and Angel and Wesley and Gunn and Connor in the same show, should be enough to sell me on this one. I just don't see how it could be done without completely dicking around with the whole format of the series. It's got, what, seven regulars already? None of whom I want to sacrifice, though I have a horrible feeling at least one will be gone by season's end. Add in the buckets of exposition necessary to bring Spike over and this could mean one big mess next season.
I can see
roseveare's and
jennyo's point about the fangirl thing (even though I *am* a Spike fangirl so... ouch). I stopped reading the Cross and Stake because every single thread degenerated into a Spike topic. Love the guy - still my favourite character - but I love all the other characters too. And sometimes you want to talk about Giles, or Kennedy vs Tara, or just the potential yumminess that is Xandrew. Okay, it's just me who wants to talk about the last one. It could well happen in the AtS fandom next season. My 2nd and 3rd favourite Jossverse characters are Wesley and Angel, and I'd really hate to see either of them get short-changed, either on the show itself or by fans.
*Sigh* I'm really making no sense with this. I'm off to read more fanfic, since I've discovered screeds of links I never knew about (there's a Dawn/Wesley archive, and one for Wishverse stuff, and one for darkfic, and, ohh! Solo stories about the characters. I'm very excited.)
Oh, one last thought about AtS: I'm wondering if Joss is keen enough to hang on to his Firefly cast that some of them will be regulars too, pushing out more of the current Angel crew. Assuming they get a renewal, of course, and I love AtS so much at the moment that I suspect I'd put up with any amount of changes just for one more season.
ETA: the definition of cruelty? The BFA having a search option for Andrew/Wesley and not having any goodies to deliver. And Andrew/Connor isn't even an option.
*Sulks*.
