Fic question

Those things you keep food in, in the kitchen. To me they're cupboards. What do you wacky Yanks call 'em? I'm sure I know this but I'm blocked, all I keep coming up with is "closet" and I know that's wrong. For example, "Joyce opened the ____ "

I may or may not be going crazy. But I love writing this fic.
