12 Days of Ficlets, Day 5 - Joy

In honour of the 5th day of the challenge, 5 super-short (40 word) drabbles.

#1 - Angel

This is the dream he never remembers on waking: sometimes Buffy, sometimes Cordelia, but whichever the girl, always the same white dress and the sunshine, and the feeling of pure happiness. And after that, the sickening terror, and the flames.

#2 - Cordelia

Her gown for prom is spectacular, even better than the one she wore as Homecoming Queen. Daddy laughed and called her his princess when he saw the credit-card bill.

Lost in the sleep that looks terribly like death, Cordelia smiles.

#3 - Anya

She wants to be married on a summer day. Not this year, though. Next year, when Dawn has lost the shadows beneath her eyes and Xander has stopped crying when he thinks she can't hear.

It's going to be perfect.

#4 - Tara

Isn't her Willow the sweetest thing? There are flowers every morning, the sweet, odd little posy that she can't find in any of the books, but that doesn't matter because Tara is very, very happy, so happy she can't breathe.

#5 - Xander

First day of school tomorrow, but he's not letting it spoil his mood. Xander's just happy that he's with his friends on a sunny day.

Beside him, Jesse's tickling Willow. She shrieks, laughing. Xander grins.

There'll always be more summers.

Your short stuff always gets me in the gut.

I love drabbles that are so much more meaningful than they appear at first glance. #5 felt like a sucker punch in my stomach. Very nice job.

Wow, #5 just about killed me. There'll always be more summers. *sobs* All of these were beautiful, you've got such a great way of grasping the character essences in so few words. The Tara one was my second favorite.
