Giles/Ethan drabble

Quickie drabble for [livejournal.com profile] connorbeast who wanted 16-year-old Giles, punk, and chaos magic.

The Fourth, the Fifth

And if you hold yourself just right, sneer in that way that says you don't give a flying fuck about anything, people don't notice you're just a sixteen-year-old posh boy playing street. Except Ethan with his cool thoughtful smiles, because Ethan is the first person in your entire life to notice everything about you.

Ethan teaches you about Janus, god of the doorways, and Ethan helps you crack open some of those doors. This is magic as you always imagined it, not the staid and hallowed rituals of your forefathers, and it makes you think of the music that your father complains is mindless noise.

Years later you will be oh so respectable and you will try to forget the magic and the music, and when you pick up a guitar you will not think about the bedsit in Bethnal Green, Ethan's fingers guiding you to D, to A.

But you are sixteen and the chaos crackles across your teeth and tongue and makes you gasp. Later that night, when Ethan creeps into your bed, you can still taste it on his skin.

I think I get the title.
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Wouldn't have been Ripper's style (but Joyce, I know, would've had Songs of Leonard Cohen somewhere in her collection), but by the release date for Various Positions I could see Giles, quietly revolutionary while trying to fit in and to atone, listening to folkie poets at night after following in his father's footsteps in the day.

Which is to say, I enjoyed it.

So, I keep being disappointed by the fics I dropped into my Memories (and I don't even know who to blame 'cause I can't remember why they're there in the first place) so I've started reading stuff by authors I trust and damn, this is perfect.
