Please, please, tell me this is on youtube

Now, it could be that everyone else in old school Who fandom already knows this and it's the equivalent of 'omg did you know Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who!!!1!' but it's entirely new to me: last night we were talking about the Brig (as one does) and my housemate mentioned seeing Nicholas Courtney on Harry Hill's sketch show some years back - playing the Brig. And singing 'Don't Leave Me This Way'.

Surely not, I thought. That's too brilliantly insane to possibly be true. So I googled a bit and found this Nick Courtney interview:

I recorded that back in October, as The Brigadier. My agent contacted me and said would you like to do The Harry Hill Show and I said, yes of course. It was wonderful to do, obviously he (Harry) had grown up with Doctor Who and liked the Brigadier and asked me to do a guest spot. I do a scene with a Cyberman and another scene where I’m singing a song by The Communards called Don’t Leave Me This Way and it should be going out at the end of February I think. So you’ll be able to see The Brigadier in full costume singing Don’t Leave Me This Way, so that should be a laugh. (Laughter).

WHAT. ALSO: THIS IS CLEARLY DOCTOR WHO CANON. SOMEHOW.

Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who!!!

It's what they used to write on the film cans and vids when they were sent down to BBC Production (so no one would know it was DW, sneak a peek and start spilling spoilers)

This is fandom history and must be tracked down and lovingly preserved....

at all costs.

(Three and Jo are v.v. amused)

And, slightly less well known but still repeated lots, the equivalent for Torchwood was 'Excalibur', hence John Hart's "Torchwood? Not Excalibur?" line...

The key question is: who is he singing it to?

(Also: god, I love my fandom.)

My google-fu is failing me terribly at the moment - this must be seen! Someone, somewhere must have this clip...

[identity profile] captainlucy.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, IMDB isn't helpful, though it does confirm the truth that he was on it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182058/ - Episode 3:01. :)

Amusingly though, Catherine Tate was on the same episode (indeed, I think she was quite a regular on the Harry Hill show).

But no Youtube. :(

This is a disaster! It must be rectified!

You're right, I remember that.

I know that there was a Davros parody in a sketch one time too.
