If anybody's been wondering why I don't update much (yeah, I'm sure you're all dying to know...) it's because Guitar Hero has eaten my life I do most of my LJ reading at work and despite being pretty sure that even if the bosses had the tech savvy to check on what we're doing the sys admin - i.e. me - would not turn me in, I start entries and then get paranoid and don't post them.

I forgot to eat lunch today, due to spending my dinner hour wallowing in the gorgeous secondhand bookshops near my work. The owners are lovely; narry a Bernard Black in sight. One of them gave me a beautiful hardcover of Nancy Mitford's novels for free because I didn't have enough cash to cover it. I also got a bunch of books about books, some history - including a book about the Battle of Culloden, have a guess why - and a book on Northern Ireland Protestants (of which I am one), which starts with the somewhat alarming question "an arrogant, bigoted minority or Ulster's chosen people?" I note he's missing the all-important "TICKY BOX" option.

People in my office are talking about Torchwood. Most of them don't watch Doctor Who; they've fallen for Mr Barrowman in How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria and are looking for chances to perv. I do hope we pick up fandom types who haven't seen Who, I'd be interested in seeing the fic that comes from that and the flamewars that are going to inevitably erupt. Speaking of Torchwood, I wrote a rather silly crackfic about Sarah and Torchwood's pet (if you don't know what this is and feel the knowledge would spoil the show, avoid)

Oh, does anybody know if [livejournal.com profile] femslash_today uses a common flist? (For example, the [livejournal.com profile] who_daily editors have [livejournal.com profile] whodaily to keep everything together.) I want to check if they're watching [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash since I keep meaning to leave links to DW stuff but always forget.

Surely it would be 'an arrogant, bigoted majority'? I seem to recall the question of majority being somewhat important when it came to choosing a First Minister for the chosen land of Ulster...

Have I been so blind that I missed Torchwood starting? Tell me no.

Good point! I just checked the book and it definitely says 'minority' which is just weird. Maybe he's writing it from a strange parallel universe?

Torchwood starts on Sunday, which is also the day Funderland closes in Belfast. Can I fit both things in? I will make a heroic attempt.

Is it written by a Brit, maybe? Unless one's actually from the province, Ulster Protestants do seem like a strange and small tribe. He could be using the term in a wider context.

Nope, he's from Belfast - but he mentions in the first chapter that he's spent 18 years living Across The Water, so that might explain it.

Is the book on Culloden the one by John Prebble? I read that one a few months ago, and quite enjoyed it.

I note he's missing the all-important "TICKY BOX" option.

How could they forget that option? It shouldn't be legal to omit a ticky box.

I was just remembering that I fell for John back when he did Titans and been waiting since then for a show that would fully showcase his talent and impossible hotness. At last! At last!

*looks forward to the wank*

It does use a common flist, but the list is offline at the moment apparently, and it's incredibly difficult to find even that info out (I just did it a few days ago, and now can't recreate my steps. Argh!) I know that during the ficathon they were informed of dw_femslash but they don't seem to be including it anymore so I wanted to get it back on, but I can't see how at present. If you can figure it out, power to you and thanks kindly...

I'm terribly curious about people watching Torchwood without knowing DW; do comment on what the office folks think after they watch it! Everyone I know who is going to watch it is a DW fan.

Oooh, which second-hand bookshop was that? I think I know most of the ones in Belfast, although there was one that disappeared and I caould never find it again. Possibly it dropped by from another dimension.

a book on Northern Ireland Protestants (of which I am one), which starts with the somewhat alarming question "an arrogant, bigoted minority or Ulster's chosen people?" I note he's missing the all-important "TICKY BOX" option.

I think I saw that book in a library or somewhere. Possibly it was the same second-hand bookshop.

Battle of Culloden, have a guess why

Does it start with a J and end in an e and have an ami in the middle?

People in my office are talking about Torchwood.

Ooh, mine too! Also discussed that find-your-roots programme that Tennant was on, and went to London/derry and was creeped out by the Orangemen in his ancestry. I learned to my surprise that one of the middle-aged women—she actually has a daughter my age in the office—is a big fan of Star Trek and SG-1.

The "arrogant bigoted minority" question is obviously put by someone who sees the answer in an all-Ireland (or possibly but less probably all-British Isles) context!

You could always update by email if you are really worried!

[livejournal.com profile] girlwatch is the watch list. Doesn't look like Who is on it, but apparently they're re-working things.
