If I ever doubt my love for Doctor Who fandom, I just need to remember that at this moment I'm holding in my hands the porn novel that's unofficially part of Eight's amnesia/trapped on Earth arc. (Hey, it gets referenced in at least one of the proper EDAs...)

*wonders if there's spanking*
*skims, confirms that there is*

ETA: And it has Withnail & I slash since the amnesiac 'Paul' is apparently both Eight *and* Marwood. *Awesome*.

OMG. Please elaborate on this. How, how, how did this happen?

Well, the erotic book company Black Lace were owned by Virgin and supposedly used to share offices with the Doctor Who New Adventures writers, this may have something to do with it? Allegedly 'Portia Da Costa' is one of the DW novel writers, but I'm not sure who she (or he) is, if any of them.

The amnesia arc has Eight trapped on Earth for over a century, not knowing who he is or why he isn't getting any older. This is nicely convenient for anyone who might want to porn him up as it removes the need to mention copyrighted things like the TARDIS, Gallifrey, or those perky companions who might get in the way of teh sex.

I'm not sure how it all came about, but the central character of The Stranger's obviously meant to be Eight (long hair, velvet frock coat, he ends up going by the name 'Dr Bowman' which he uses in some of the Big Finish short stories...) except for the bits where he's Paul McGann's character from Withnail & I. Or Paul McGann's character from Withnail & I is Eight. Either way there is lots of pr0n, and the main female character in this, Claudia, is briefly mentioned in The Gallifrey Chronicles. Hurrah for this fandom, I say.

*is DED* I desperately want to a) read this book; and b) watch Withnail & I. And marry the entirety of DW fandom, but that's a given.

Ooooh! I feel strangely inclined to buy this book, despite never having read any DW novels and I've still not seen Withnail and I (not through lack of trying - I've seen three different parts of it!)
*is intrigued*

Dude! I *know* Portia da Costa! Well, sort of. I hang out with her at the Erotic Romance online chapter of Romance Writers of America. How cool is that!

Paul McGann is very.. dapper. That's the word. :)
Still not seen the film, though. I'm curious.

he ends up going by the name 'Dr Bowman'

That's not just Big Finish, that's from the TV movie, which makes it about as close to Eighth Doctor canon as anything can possibly be. Oy.

I had never heard of this novel. My head is spinning. And now I really want to know which of the novel writers "Portia" might actually be... hasn't anybody made any guesses based on the prose style?

I was about to excitedly say 'I know a writer at Black Lace! I can help you out!' but I see a commenter below actually knows Portia herself. Small world. :)
