My lab partner and I are doing so much work today. Hear the sarcasm in my typing.

Anyway.

Let's talk about William's lifestyle. And not in the fun sexual orientation sense. I was puzzled by his house. Nothing I can really put my finger on, except they seemed much wealthier than I expected, given Cecily's snooty attitude in FFL. I mean, WillMom's doctor was Dr. Gull, for Christ's sake! As in doctor to the Queen! [livejournal.com profile] connorbeast claims that Dr. Gull wouldn't have taken on nouveau riche, either, and he's fairly sure either William or his dad would have had to have been a freemason. But anyway, could have just been a nice nod to From Hell, since there were a couple of other lines that seemed like shoutouts to comic writers.*

Connorbeast's immediate reaction to the first flashback was "um. Why did William live on the set of My Fair Lady?" And suddenly it made perfect sense! Cecily clearly snubbed him because of the scandalous gossip about his mother selling flowers in her youth, despite her attempts to hide her roots by changing her name from Eliza to Anne. The fluctuations in Spike's accent - in the basement scene I couldn't figure out who Donny was until I realised Spike had just said "Dawnie" with an American accent - are down to him growing up with a phonetics expert for a dad. The awful poetry was an attempt to copy his parents' odd habit of bursting into song every so often.

Then, to spoil a perfectly good theory-
Me: Wait. My Fair Lady was set in the 1900s. It's too early.
CB: Damn.
Me: Yeah.
CB: Maybe Professor Higgins had a time machine.

It'd explain why I've seen people online argue that pre-vamp Spike was Jack the Ripper, even though he was sired 8 years before the murders. He inherited his dad's time machine! Of course!

* Nikki's watcher being called Crowley and a cut line where Drusilla calls William "Lucien" could both conceivably be Neil Gaiman shoutouts.

Oh, and I've started a separate recs journal at [livejournal.com profile] doylerecs just to let me keep my links in order for the possibly far-off day when I update my site. Tonight or tomorrow I want to add a rec for Mr. Grieves and the Fallen Woman, since throughout LMPTM I kept confusing fanfic with canon.

He's never been able to pronounce Dawn properly.
And, yep, I thought it was a very nice house, probably full of tasty servants too.

DUDE!!!

I was thinking the same thing all thru the episode, esp when she was coughing up blood. I swear these TV writers are ganking from fanfic left & right.

I wish I could take credit for this, but the lovely & talented [livejournal.com profile] vrya made this, and many other anti-spoiler icons, which can be found HERE (http://www.vrya.net/ts/icons.php?g=spoiled).
