Jeff Bell, recapping this season:

"We’ve asked ourselves the question, ‘Can a bunch of outsiders who are fighting evil go into the belly of the beast and change it from the inside without being changed ourselves?’ And that’s one of the things we’re trying to get to. Another issue we’ve got is this whole prophecy thing. Does it mean anything? What does it mean to Angel, to Spike? Will Spike and Angel ever kiss?"

:dies and is ded:

(Now I'm trying to find that interview where - Drew Goddard, was it? Said that the one thing they always, always wanted to do on Buffy was have Spike and Xander kiss and it just never happened. I'm sure I didn't dream that...)

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] snidgemma points out that it was in fact Drew Greenberg. And we have the video evidence.

Also, David Fury said that the primary romance of the season was Spike+Angel.

Good catch, I forgot that one!

James Marsters did say that Spike and Angel were never going to kiss, what with the both of them being men. But he's been wrong quite a lot of times before...

Yes, he once said in the DVD commentaries that male vampires killed female victims only, and female vampires only killed male victims, statements which are clearly false.

Yeah, and that we'd never see Spike biting a guy because he's straight!

There's a Mister Holden Webster who begs to differ *g* (Although wasn't that why Drusilla suddenly became Spike's sire, because of the homoerotic subtext that Angel siring him implied? Or is that a fandom urban legend? Clearly didn't bother them when it came to Penn and Lawson...)

Agreed, Holden, Penn, and Lawson, as well as that guy at the beginning of season three in flashbacks, James (http://vrya.net/bdb/ep.php?ep=45&eptype=AtS), was it, they all put the lie to that straight vampire thing.

I don't know about the fandom urban legend.

Possibly Billy Ford, but I always assumed Dru sired him, since Spike seemed too irritated by him to do it himself. Unless it was to hurt Buffy, but that seems more Angelus's style.
