UC Ficathon woes

Hmm. So, I'm trying to write Giles/Ethan set in the 70s (you should see how many sentences I have bolded to remind myself to check and make sure this TV show or that shop isn't an anachronism - how do people write historical fiction? I'm writing about a country I know, less than a decade before I was born, and it's hard!) And then I remember Band Candy and that Giles was already Ripper/ticking-timebomb-destroy-the-world guy at 16... oops. Because my 18-year-old Giles is pre-Ripper. Frankly, that was the only way I could have him at Oxford, unless he did his O- and A-Levels astonishing young and had already dropped out of university by 16. (Or while conducting dark magic rituals and/or generally doing the mega teenage rebellion thing he still not only turned up for but managed to pass his exams.) Sod it, I'll pretend Band Candy's Ripper was 18 or 19.

Some would say I overthink things.

(And I have to go and get this bloody essay done before I finish the fic. Will be up tonight, though. Last night I had two Word windows open, one with my essay on "Why John Bell Was an Important Physicist" and the other with my Connor/Angel incest fic. And a post-it stuck to the monitor saying 'for God's sake, don't mix these up'.)

Buffy actually had her facts wrong. In "The Dark Age," Giles says that he leaves Oxford for London and meets Ethan and co. when he's 21.

Eep, he didn't know Ethan before he left Oxford?... crapcrapcrap.

Wait, I'm sure my person requested Giles/Ethan set when Giles was still at Oxford, so I hope they'll excuse my liberties with canon. I can age them a bit (I originally had Giles being 20 anyway, then changed it when I remembered Band Candy.)

it's okay, I had similar worries when I had to do G/E for Secret Slasha... Giles says that he left Oxford and got mixed in with a bad lot, but never specifically says that he didn't meet Ethan, or start getting Ripperish, before he left Oxford.

This contradicts Band Candy's thesis that he's Ripperish at the age of 16, meaning we can pretty much write what we like about the early years, as the canon contradicts itself anyway.

Heh, I was gonna point out that it was Buffy who gave that age so hey, probably wrong, but I see smarter people have beaten me to it with actual facts. But now I'm pondering the idea that anything Buffy says can be disregarded as uncanonical. ;) "You know Buffy? Sweet girl, not that bright..." Hee.

Yeah, seems that Band Candy Giles would have had to have been in his late teens, more likely very early 20s.

You just know the show's writers don't pay this kind of attention to the minuitae...*g*

Actually, Giles never says when he met Ethan. He could have left Oxford *with* Ethan for all we know. :) Also, just because he was a sixteen-year-old in Band Candy doesn't necessarily mean he was actually *like* that when he was sixteen. He just had the potential to be, I think. All that spell really did was make him really immature...
