I hate this weather. Today was a two nightmare day, and the first nightmare was very anatomical and very memorable.

Actually I came back to this draft a couple hours later and the nightmare has gone a bit interesting philosophically. Like, there was so much magical healing it went all ax of my fathers, where by the end we had effectively cloned Eliot. Like which one was the original was complex because they'd been frankensteined really creatively in between, but there were definitely two of them when the healing settled in.

Also I like that my reading has given my dream me more of a tool kit. Like sure, gaming in the Shadow gives me spectacular nightmare fuel, but, the nightmare guys tell me I shall be in the dark Forever
and I just shout Sarenrae.

Eat sunlight.

River Song Tegan and Ace

I finished listening to this Big Finish box set and it was really very good, once I was in the right mood for this.
Tegan and Ace have Opinions about how River is behaving and get her to promise not to kill anyone while they are with her
with complex effects.

I really like hearing them interact.
Also I enjoy hearing the actresses zoom their character ages around with their voice.

I also like how the ending drops them off with a bonus year for Adventures to happen in and a really good reason for them to get to know each other.

The way they pop back and forth through River's lifetime is usually excellent but weirdly frustrating this time, because last time she was back in the Library so you want to know what happens next. But then this time she doesn't say when she is but it plausibly could be several? So it's like having a sky piece on a puzzle.

Good though, A+ do recommend set.

And now I want to go back and relisten all the River Song stories.

Video Games

Hey, it's a semi-fannish post! I don't make those very much lately. Let's hope this is the beginning of me getting back to that. 🤞🏻

As was probably obvious from my post last night, I'm trying to get back into the habit of playing video games again. It's one of those things where I honestly feel happier and more mentally stable when I'm making the time to play for a bit daily or at least every few days, but it's really hard to find the time and energy sometimes. Especially the last, uh, year or two. What with everyone going on IRL in various ways.

So, you know, I'm actively working on improving that.

Rambling under the cut about my current daily schedule and how I'm trying to fit video games into it more regularly. )

That said, I am going to attempt to make posts here and there where I ramble about what's going on in whatever game and playthrough I'm focusing on at that time. I have no idea if I'll manage it, but I'm going to try. I really miss being properly fannish about things, and I want to at least try to get back to it.

Baldur's Gate 3

I freely admit that I cackled a little when I saw this conversation happening in one of my D&D Discords. Especially since I was literally in the middle of playing Baldur's Gate 3 at that very moment. I feel like I'm being judged, but I can't really blame them when it's, you know, true.

Speaking of which, my gnome sorcerer/bard was very busy doing important things tonight:

In related news, I love the poly mod. Also? It works surprisingly well when combining these two romances specifically. Karlach and Wyll's relationship makes it very much come across as two Vs working towards a triad.

DW 12 and River

Today I watched The Husbands of River Song
which is funny but at least a bit mean and then sad and then back to complicated happy
and very much full of feels.

So I finished watching and decided the next Bug Finish listen had to be the River Song set I haven't listened to yet.
But so far it is River and Ace and Tegan and not actually remembering everything and working at cross purposes and being bad at lying (Ace and Tegan) and doing terrible accents (the actors realised the characters can't act as well as they can) and it is an interesting setup but not particularly feelings yet so I managed to displease me with a perfectly reasonable story.

Also the temperature continues Blergh.

So I am going to check the internet for a bit before I listen the second episode.

Hugo Awards 2025

I remembered to become a member this year in order to vote, huzzah! Which means I had access to the voting packet (AKA the giant packet of PDF books), which meant I was able to review many more things than I can on my own (given affordability and library waiting times).

Also, ALSO, WorldCon is in Seattle this summer, so I'll theoretically get to be there in person when they announce the winners!

So many books! And other stuff! )

DW series 9 with 12 and Clara

I have watched Doctor Who up through Hell Bent.

That is a lot of feelings all in a row.

Actually Sleep No More felt pointless and boring. Nothing got fixed and it was made of lies anyway.

Face the Raven struck me as more of a jump for Clara this time around. Like it follows on from the last episode with Rigsy but is less smooth as a progression of the previous episodes. It fits, but.
The trap street made me angry. Trap for refugees. Keeping them under control with a potential death sentence. Angry.
It was interesting making them all look human but with glimpses, like translating them all back, but also skipped a lot of individual differences and needs. Like pretending nobody is disabled ao you wouldn't have to think about reasonable accomodations.
Clara being brave was a good ending.
And then.

Heaven Sent was very very good indeed.
(more angry happening of course.)
Talk about a star showcase.

Hell Bent ... did pretty much the opposite of wrapping anything up.
Gallifrey unwrapped.

I don't know as I'm keen on the general theme of Consequences What Consequences, but, story do continue to unwind, so.

I think the Hybrid prophecy is a daft thing to be worried about though. Someone standing in the ruins sounds more like an Archaeologist.

Doctor Who is still very good.

But August very much reminds me there's meant to be more to life than Doctor Who.

Which I should make plans to achieve.
even a bit.

poem up at Penumbric!

My poem "portrait of the artist as a young gorgon" is up at Penumbric! It started out as a short story, loosely inspired by the Hammer film The Gorgon. Then it turned into a poem. Maybe one of these days I'll try to finish the story.

DW up through Zygons

I have rewatched Clara's last season up to the Zygon pair.

The episode where immortal Me stops caring and starts again was only sort of interesting for what the Doctor is saying about himself. Read more... )
Good enough story but didn't make me chew over it in ways distinct from my general thinking about Jack and Immortals.

The Zygon stories though... they made me very angry this time. Read more... )

That said, very strong writing, many good aspects.

But it was strongest about the Doctor and his feelings, not about the many complicated parts of the situation.

Look at this sweet, innocent child who definitely wouldn't do something like piss all over my bed at 1am.

Oh, Garrus. It's a good thing he's cute. And that I know it was because of lingering issues from what led to the vet trip on Thursday rather than anything else.

Oh, Garrus...

Welp. Garrus definitely just had an accident on the bed a few minutes ago. 🙃

I'm pretty sure it's stemming from the same issue that led to the vet trip a few days ago, so I can't really be mad at him. His timing is about as horrible as it could be, though, because I very much don't have the money to go wash multiple loads of clothes right now. Plus, you know, it's 1am which isn't great either.

My sheets and comforter are currently in the bathtub, and I'm going to see what I can do via handwashing to try and remove as much of the smell as possible. I'm trying to raise the $20 that I'll need to cover two loads over on Bluesky, so I'm hoping that throwing them in the bathtub will at least work as a stopgap.

August is, uh, certainly shaping up to be a month so far. That's for sure.

ETA: Okay, I have the money to wash and dry two loads, so I'm going to go get them in the washer now (and hope that there's nobody in the suite to the laundry room right now who I'll be disturbing). Hopefully I'm washing them fast enough that the scent won't have a chance to sink in at all. 🤞🏻

WotR: I beat Chained Darkness on Core

I even saved the game properly so I can prove it.

Did it pop up an achievement? Did it heck. Haven't had achievements show since 02/08 and it is very annoying because I have Achieved repeatedly.

But I named the main character Coren so I shall remember which victory was on Core when it is import to main game time.

... I also finished saving the world without having a rest, which is just showing off really. They were soooo out of spells, and we couldn't use Guarded Hearth again without resting, but honestly the only fight in this game that gave me any difficulty at all is Chained Darkness.

I think winning was quite a lot luck. My best characters were hitting on 16s and most tries they just ran out of health before the Darkness did. But this time I did a bunch of Dispels early so they got rid of his best spells, and he never cast one really annoying one because surrounded by stabby. Either that or it was bugged. But I won either way.

Happy now :-)

Possibly shall do something other than retry this for entire numbers of days...

Today I did another load of laundry and played WotR on Core some more.

I am 100% certain I did the achievements again but they did not ping. Again.

Somewhere around midnight I decided to just have a go at the achievement boss fight in the secret bit.
... it is now 4am and I have a much better idea of what doesn't work.
*sigh*

I am going to have to try it again with different characters. And buy a lot of holy water in case I don't get any better ideas. The only ones doing damage are casting Pillar of Life or running right up to the jerk and slapping Heal on him. Funnily enough, not optimal. Someone should be able to lay a sword, club, arrow, bite or talon on it but noooooo.

I shall bring someone better at hitting things and hope it works better.

It is ridiculously difficult. Literally nothing else has been a challenge, and then suddenly this thing is impossible. Rubbish scaling there.

If this second try doesn't work I'm going to have to design a mercenary specifically just to hit this thing. Which would be very mathy and annoying.

Up until then I was having fun though.

Pretty okay day, just want the game to do what it says it will.
